Just because you are unlawful it doesn't mean that you are evil. In my unlawfuls, I usually aim for more of a "I'm not-nice" approach, instead of an "I eat babies" approach to interactions with people.
Sure, you may feel like a meanie when you kill those annoying powertraders who don't respond to anything, but oh well. Just pretend that they are the evil people, because they are. Imagine yourself as a lawman in a world where everyone has lost sight of what is truly good, and what is truly evil.

Make a Xeno.
You don't have to worried about being the one who instigates trouble. Trouble sure starts whatever you do if you hang around a bit.
And you can pick your favorite foreign trading enemy. It's easier to pull it off /the tough guy act) that way.

Being evil is not needed as most unlawfuls.
Just remember, your out to make a living, and your willing to kill others to do so. You dont even need to enjoy it. Hell, i've said sorry when blowing up people on one of my pirates.
