Firstly, define armour ( armor ).
The whole point of armour is to protect the EXTERIOR of the person / vehicle / vessel.
Do you put armour under your skin or on top of it, if the former applies, get a psychiatric evaluation, if the latter, then it would not take up cargo space, but it most certainly would reduce the speed of that which the armour was fitted to.
Easiest solution is to upgrade the shields to a more defensive role as they're quite useless as they now stand, this would mean a much fairer balance across ALL ships and would not affect combat abilities.
But as my opinion is based on 42 years of engineering it probably won't mean much to most.

I voted radiation would kill us. Without armor, you can't pirate there or even RP in radiated zones.
Also: Armor can be a saving grace. Unarmored transports get insta'd by SNAC's and Nova's when they lack armor. It also saves us from that lucky mine and or missile strike.

Without armor update, PvP will be short, because we can kill enemy with only one torpedo!
At Discovery are missiles, guns, torpedos, Razors that doing big damage and will be boring to fight (from 1 shoot you will die!)
So armor's must be at Discovery!

Removing Armour Upgrades will destroy the whole Balancing, a Cruiser will easily die buy one Bomber (And you can even do this already)

If we remove armour we'll see alot more caps around as well. cap 7/8 is nearly a must for a capital ship these days and if it is taken away then the balancing will be different and that will remove many 100's of millions from the price of a fully equipt BS.

Reduce bats/bots, really.
Killing same fighter for 3 times in row isn't fun.
If you just remove armor, without buffing hulls, it would just kill any balance.

This creates a whole slew of problems. Radiation, weapons balance, ship class balance... seriously, it's not worth it. That and you're all talking about the "problem" of long combat when I happen to find it rather enjoyable. If you don't like it, it's really not that hard to stay out.
