I don't like idea of ammo being expensive.. i hate it..

Its not helping anyone at all..

Well, if you make such ammo cheap, what will prevent anybody from mounting lets say 4 and just spam your GB dead? I mean with these guns, it can outgun a bomber in damage efficiency, so at least some balance.

Unique ammo? Limit it to 70 and no one will spam it. Same as you can mount 6 Cannonballs but with 70 ammo no one uses it...

Or make gun expensive and leave ammo balanced like other missiles/mines

Edit: I think it should even be cheaper because its not guided missile. So just normal fly straight with a bit more boom shouldn't be expensive at all.

And don't forget if it fly straight you can dodge it.

They are easy to make yes.

There are 2 main issues:

a) damage can't be too high to avoid insta-kills whem people mount more of them and to avoid them beeing too good against gbs/cruisers

b) lag makes missiles fire a bit later than you push the button (compared with guns) cause it's server that controls the missile trajectory afaik => they will be harder to aim than guns of same speed

That said I really like unguided rockets in Freespace 1 and 2. So I'm kinda for it.

Well whole point is to overcome the unique ammo so you can actually have lots of these onboard.
And yes, given their nonguided nature, you can dodge.
But at least decent speed would be nice, bit faster then SNAC, and maybe a detonation range

Right, low damage but high refire output makes them similar to a high damage slow firing missiles. Except you can dodge these.
Second, it should take entire core to fire em up.
And I wonder, whether it is possible to make them with extra damage agaisnt some ships. While having inferno and sabre makes you kill a cruiser eventually, for others, how bout some missiles like this!.-)

id say

Launcher = 2.5m
ammo = 1 - 2.5k

making say 2 types, one bit slower speed and refire but high damage and range, and one that spams the hell outta ya with high speed rockets but less damage and range

I thought of something similar when I was working on a model (that has since then been deleted due to technical problems)

Quote:Unguided missile system

Refire Rate: 1.25
Hull damage per hit: 6200
Shield Damage per hit: 4400
Projecticle Speed: 380m/sec
Energy Drain: 1000 energy

This slow moving projectile would deal about 7750 DPS if it was to collide with each hit. Of course, the projectiles are completely unguided, fire rather slowly, and move at a fairly slow speed, so it would be ineffective against Gunboats, Bombers, Fighters, etc. The only things at risk of the damage would be Battleships and large Cruisers, leaving the smaller ones like the Siege Cruiser able to outmaneuver before the missiles hit.

Note that it uses energy, not unlike that of capital ship missiles.

No need for ammo here.

These would be sort of mounted coaxial, so if it can be made so that the weapon doesn't turn with your mouse, and only fires directly forwards, it would be nice. Just like the Siege Cruiser FWG.

Mrm. Tempests.

I kinda like the idea, but only due to FreeSpace.

If done, would it then create 'incoming missile' spam, or can they be modified so that they don't lock at all (never mind not turning)?
