I belive software is everything that is not hardware, from a modified human genom to holy scripts to various types of other programmed matter.

We should think of it as something that is quite a few steps above the current use we have at this point of time. After all the processing hardware in Sirius seems to be a little bit more than what we have right now, too.

It's science fiction a few hundred years ahead after all.

Tell you what I'd like to see? Forging devices. >_>

As for the generic-ism, it should be that way. Maybe.... Counterfeit software and illegal writers/hardware?

We have no need to broaden our current spectrum any farther than it should.
Food rations? Why don't we divide it into all 5 food groups so they're all equally noticed?
There is a reason we don't have "Wheaties", nor "Veggies", as well as "Meatloaf", nor "Sugarcane" as commodities.
They serve no point and all they do is clog up the mod.
It's unneeded work.

Food Rations, Synth Paste, Luxury Food.

How about raw minerals?

Beryllium, Boron, Cobalt, Copper, Silver, Gold, Iridium, Platinum, Niobium.

Fuel?

H-Fuel, Deuterium, Oil, MOX.

People?

Passengers, Tourists, Vacationers, Refugees, Prisoners, VIPs, Scientists, Spaceship Crew, Slaves, assorted faction-specific pilots.

Metals and Other Building Materials?

Basic Alloy, Super Alloy, Scrap Metal, Superconductors, Polymers, Ship Hull Panels.

I'm sure I can continue if you like. The mod's already gone in the "more diversity" route, and I think it works a hell of a lot better than Escape Velocity Nova's six generic commodities.

Besides, I'm reasonably sure that the existing commodity list is smaller in filesize than even a handful of the ships in the mod, so that argument's also rather poor. Remember that they don't have their own models, just an icon, infocard, and price list.

However, I don't really think Counterfeit Software needs to be made more specific as much as I want other related commodities to be profitable as part of the same route (although this could simply be because I haven't found any.) Purely for selfish reasons, of course.

Firstly... we are presuming that Music and movies are in the same medium as they are today. That would probably not be correct in the future.

Movies today are becoming more interactive, 3-d all the time.

A software movie could be completely immersive using Holo-tainment (another ingame commodity)

Music as well, music could be adjusted (imagine that you don't like a certain song being sung by a woman, you could change it to a man, or a group... or change lyrics to be more specific... interactive music... the possibilities are astounding)

All of these applications could well fit with "software"

even books are moving towards digital. If you combine this, with the old choose your own adventure stories of the late eighties, again you have a 'software' situation.

The medium is the mode... and the mode that seems popular at the moment in Freelancer appears to be computer based.

Who knows, maybe they will move full circle and embrace the wonder of vinyl... or the long neglected, but still wondrous 8-track.

Quote:Computer software, or just software is a general term primarily used for digitally stored data such as computer programs and other kinds of information read and written by computers. Today, this includes data that has not traditionally been associated with computers, such as film, tapes and records.[1] The term was coined in order to contrast to the old term hardware (meaning physical devices); in contrast to hardware, software is intangible, meaning it "cannot be touched".[2] Software is also sometimes used in a more narrow sense, meaning application software only.

That is from wikipedia.
Considering one of the main things it means is digitally stored data...
I think Counterfeit Software covers what's being asked quite nicely.
