I was messing around with engine kill today and found that if you do it while cruising you maintain your speed but can shoot (with what little power isn't drained, though it recharges to that point). Is that against the rules or anything? It just seems kind of strange

It isn't against the rules and its kind of useless actually, since you can't change direction while in a EK. As soon as you tab the thruster or the strafe key, your speed will drop to normal.
Also, your powerpland doesn't recharge while you are faster than 200.

Ya, I realised that shortcoming after I posted.
It doesnt charge past the little bit, but that little bit will keep recharging.
I just found it odd that it worked. Battleships could do drive-bys like that or something.

In combat, a Mosquito works just as well as a Train disruptor. Don't spam them mindlessly as you'll end up exhausting your supply, this is important especially with the more expensive Train types as you can burn through your money. Place your disruptors strategically, commonly when your opponent launches ordnances or perform engine kills.
A cruise disruptor isn't essential in fights, but they give you an edge.

Actually, it does recharge. Try going into cruise, and EK it, then just tap your thruster button to get your speed below 300 and watch the magic.
Check it. I had to SS it before the power was at it's maximum because I was drifting into a rock, but you'll get the picture.

Pretty sure if you tap the thruster, you drop out of EK and your speed is quickly reduced to non cruise speed. Meaning, yes it will recharge.
His point was if you EK while at cruise, your weapons aren't going to recharge; until you drop below a certain speed.

I just tested it.
When you engine kill from cruise, tapping thrust will not decrease your speed down to impulse at once.
Once your speed is below 250, your energy reserve recharges.
