Guess whose coming to dinner. - Doc Holliday - 02-07-2011

"Honestly, Jim," replied Doc, "I think we'll get more resolved on your back then we will re-conditioning the minds of people. In my studies, I've discovered that just giving that child who just lost his or her parents to a war or to a Corsair bomb on a Freeport. I've dealt with both cases and many more. If you want to hear it for yourself, go to the Port Jackson Refugee colony."

He took a sip of his brandy, "My medical team takes care of their needs to include one of my favorite things, just listening. To me, there is no greater feeling than a young child who just wants someone to listen to them."
He shakes his head, "No medicine, no procedure can heal like that. They don't understand war. They see it as a bunch of grown-ups who can't agree and should be given "time out."
He finished with, "If you're able too some time, I'll take you there."

He took a few bites of his food as Midori came back out to check on them, "Gentlemen, there is plenty more if you like." She then smiled and looked at Jim as she picked on her husband, "You not want me to make him eat lots of left overs do you?" To take a break herself, she poured herself a glass of wine and took a seat.

"As to your back, Jim, I'll need to run a full diagnostic on it," Doc explained, "by the sounds of it, you have a lot of damage there from long ago. Backs are tricky and difficult to treat. Canaria Medical has an awesome department for that. So, that is where we will need to start."

Jim nodded recalling his own experiences on junker bases where a clan would loose a parent or a whole family unit.. leaving children sometimes with no one.

"No ...junkers lose family members intermittently.. I do a lot of family counciling as a result and I never charge for it. But the trajedys are too spread out for just me to cover sometimes. Junkers get mostly quiet.. and keep thier personal concerns intensely private so..being the nosey bastard I am i have to pry and pry and..pry more to get these poor sods to open up.

Again.. if I had a medical frigate I was confident in Id be more then overjoyed to visit every trouble spot and critical aid location you name. because quite frankly your the authority there."

he saw Mrs.Holiday finally take a load off.

"It was divine madam.. thank you." he said to her complementing the meal.

He wet his whistle with refreshed wine glass.

"I feel it in my bones theres trouble brewing for all of us.. Not just junkers.. it might not just be me appealing to your expertise to convert some of those old corvos out there into medical frigates. Med.Force.One. Is a marvel and I know if anyone can make a ship into a medical facility.. your the one.. Thats basicly why I had to come to you for my project."

He contemplated

"Caneria medical..hrmm.. Groundhog doctors.. Im sure they probably want to just stuff me in a jar.. im weary of surgery.. Again.. Id trust you cause youve handled ships in space... as for the golfers.. that practice medicine I meet on some of these outer worlds... well.." He made a concerned sour expression.

"I have the cash.. I just need a diagnosis that tells me other then.. Im old and I need to live with it." he went for the rest of his wine.

"No one wants to be Lazarus here... but I keep getting 59's the new 40. .. heh heeeeeh....sssshhhhhheeeze sure I feel like 40... something else.. " he shook his head.

Doc smiled and shook his head, "Groundhog doctors? I think not." He then gave his evidence, "It was those "Groundhog Doctors" that gave me a double lung transplant not so long ago that saved my life. I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss them."
He then pointed skyward toward where Med.Force.One would be, "You will find that a lot of what goes on up there is based on practices from bother here and Cambridge Medical back on planet Cambridge. I send a lot of my students to Cambridge. In fact, I've got a young, aspiring lady there now. She's scheduled to graduate probably in 3 months if all goes right."

He sat back and took his drink in hand, crossing his feet, "As for extra curriculars, we all have them as doctors to unwind a bit. Some golf, some climb the uncharted mountains on this planet and some of us," he raised his hand and smiled, "shoot skeet, ride caballas or play the piano."
He then jokingly said, "Don't be so critical, Jim."

He then said with a straight face, "I've never charged for my work and I won't charge you. If someone wants to give me something then I usually ask that the courtesy be passed on or I have a favor later on." He took a sip of his drink, "I can use them here and there ya know!"

He smiles at the news about the impending graduation.

"I remember coming out of Manhattan Med.. right out of graduation.. Oh.. it was a million years ago it seems like." he smirked.

"I dont mean to be so damn sour about groundhogs.. its just.. lessen yer running 4300 tonnes of feminine hygiene products through hostile territory so a clan of feminist revolutionary's get what they need... Golf seems kind of.. droll. that and my tempers cause of the pain. gives me a vary short wick if you get what I mean." *he rubbed the back of his neck.

This prompted his robot nurse to begin a therapeutic routine of checking tension in his neck. Jim faught the nurse off. "leave me be, shyte." the nurse droid kept close but didnt retreat.

"John..." he stated.

"Ive been such a fan of yours that asking help in my own medical project and this damn back of mine was a vary intimidating prospect." he thought a moment.

"But your so down to earth its unreal. So if there is anything on my side of the fence you need, you got it. Though as a junker thats.. more business as per usual.. running from mercenaries.. kusari.. hell anyone and everyone lately theres precious few tasks that haven't been mortally dangerous for me or the congress..."

He looked about briefly.. noticing the day was getting long..

"Ugh the reminds me I need to buy some computers from the hackers for the medical ship... theres a group of repressed and highly depressed pirates." he had a sip of water.

From the house, the soft cry of a crying baby could be heard.
"Ekusukyu-zumi," said Midori as she stood up and hastily walked inside.
"My daughter is awake," Doc said smiling.
"Thank you, Jim, for your praise," he continued, "fact is, I was once like so many, thinking with my guns more than logic. Between Eris, new lungs and thus, a new life and Midori, well, I have something to live for. So, rather than killing people, I chose to help them."

"I know little of the Lane Hackers," commented Doc on Jim's reference to them, "I've had little interaction with them except for one long ago who gave me some burn trauma equipment that is now used aboard Med.Force. It quite literally has made a huge difference in the lives of many."

"I'm going to help you in your project in whatever way I can," he declared, "so long as we agree not to forcefully condition people's minds against their own will."
He stood up, "But, before we do, I'm going to evaluate that back of yours myself at Canaria Medical. If nothing else, I'd like the satisfaction of fixing it.

As he was standing, Midori returned holding his daughter, Emiko, whom she handed to Doc's outstretched hands. Emiko had the "just woke up" look.
"Jim," said the smiling Doc, "this is my daughter, Emiko, one of the greater pleasures of my life."
After some coaxing, Doc managed to get a smile out of her.

There was something universal about old men and baby's. Jim never had a problem getting a child's attention.. (he was always sort of nervous around kids..maybe they sensed this) small children and.. seemingly small domesticated animals where well tempered around him at least to start.

"Shes got that look john.. this ones going to be too smart..." he couldn't help but smile at the child and for a moment he wished he was younger. Possibly made a few different decisions about his own son.. It was a long story he might tell john when the mood wouldn't suffer the tale...

"Theres a thought.. how are the schools here?.. Thats another thing Ive been wanting to urgently invest in, I saw some of the classical school houses On Erie and even in those modular schools the classes were small and there weren't screaming children anywhere. It was like being in a temple... amazingly well adjusted youth." he remarked.

"Thank you for your support. I was going to have the ship operate on a trust with you as the trustor... I can be a trustee and executor the actions of it and the benefiters would be zoners and junkers and anyone in need... Sorta like a charity but you have control over the trust. which is important cause.. Well... I am nearly 60 after all. I'd like to think it will continue with the volunteers and doctors I get on board the Estium whens shes done." He stretched.

"John your family is the envy of this old man... And if you know the staff at the medical center bother who you know and this mans corpse will be there ready and wincing." He grinned.

uncharacteristically tinny. the android chimed in. "Sir, its often beneficial to not dread your medical appointments."

he scowled at the machine..knowing that was a line from one of his own books about the phobias of medical care.

"Smartass."

Still holding Emiko, he looked at Jim, "Well, if you want, we can head over to Canaria medical and I can run some diagnostics."
Doc then handed Emiko off to Midori who took her inside.
"I'm ready when you are," he stated.

jim nodded and got his cane. "Your the doc. Doc."

tinny was already following him like a shadow and the bot had his things he found it disturbing how easy and attentive the machine was.

"Might as well get that done while the wine is on my brain. " me mentioned Following the doc along.

He had not given much thought about it.. but he began to worry just how really bad it was back there.

Guess whose coming to dinner. - Doc Holliday - 02-17-2011

A couple of hours later, both men were in the confines of Canaria Medical. Jim was laying face up on a scanning bed.
"This will tell me all I need to know about your back," Doc explained, "Just lay still. It will give detailed pictures and analysis of your back. While I could give a full health scan, I'm focusing on the problem at hand."
He then pointed at a booth behind him, "I will be back there during the procedure."

Jim watched as the scanner passed over head beginning at his head. Slowly, it worked it's way down his body and then back up. It would do this several times, each pass with a different type and strength of scan.
Doc monitored each pass, checking results, sometimes pausing at a spot for a more, detailed look. Several times he would raise an eyebrow or scratch his chin. It was bad but not impossible. After about an hour, he finished his scans, formulated his finding and went to talk to Jim.

With Jim still laying down, he pulled up a chair. The scans were re-broadcast into a screen above them for Jim to watch as Doc explained them.
"I'll give it to you straight, Jim, you're in pretty rough shape but it can be fixed," he began. He pointed out things on a detailed scan. Just about every disc in Jim's back was pointed at and was either severely slipped or deteriorating."
"All those pod ejections most likely did this. Both can be treated with a lot of therapy and medicine," he continued. He then stopped and pointed at a couple of them in his lower back, "but these two are basically gone and causing you most of your pain. I can replace those with a phenolic disc or even one contructed of donated cartilage. But, before I start therapy, I HAVE to replace those two first."

He then asked him, "Now, are you going to put off your life's schedule for awhile or do I have to assign you a Klingon security detail to keep you here?" He then smiled, "I can write you a doctor's note to your superiors if needed."

Tinny looked somewhat pleased for a robot.. not saying I told you so like a good companion it was listening in the background recording his medical data as it was the source of Jims records and data.

Jim himself looked like doc pronounced he would need to be a cybernetic head on a plate.

"Thats gonna be months.." painfully commented.

The last ejection was cause of a mercenary group known as the Reavers... The merc actually gave him time to get into the pod.. a rare.. nicety in space. But it was oddly symbolic..Jim figured that it meant that the universe only had so many free passes left for him.

" I had planned.. on the worst of it.. taking months.. before coming here.. The only thing not taken care of was the Estium medical cruiser and her being constructed so I guess the business there is concluded. Tinny here has my own A.I. subroutines... and can give me updates.. run errands.. tell my.. wife where I am..." he sighed.. thinking.

He figured hed be getting a lot of reading done. then he took a good look at his back scans. Doc was right.. the lower back looked almost fused and even he would possible prescribe a prosthetic... but in someone his age probably wouldn't get any real use out of titanium spine segments.

"The vertibre looks impacted even... You use nanites for that? or some Holiday magic remedy you keep to yourself out here?" he hoped... for the magic cure silently..

"Doc, anywhere else? this would take 6 months, I should know i worked enough severe cases... keeping them engaged daily instead of losing their minds... So im hoping... I dont lose it.. "
