buggy programming.
If you fire them in an astroid field or other places where debris is floating, the flak shells 'hit' that debris and explode. same as with missles, really. as flak are missles. just extremely crappy ones.

Battleship flak turrets are made purely for decoration eludes you into believing they're actually useful against small things.

Flak turrets are great against NPC's both friend,and foe unfortunately. They suck against players who are smart enough to stay 2K away.Just like Solaris turrets. Both completely useless against players in Bombers.
Now for those who say they suck? They do not suck.They are just countered very easy,and also make NPC's hostile. As a test i out-fitted my dread with all Flaks. This is a true story,but sure many will not believe it. Big battle between Rheinland Indies,and Liberty Indies. Was about a year ago. Icharged my dread into the furball where alot of snub's were going at a few GB's while other caps were fighting other caps. The few Lib snub's were for some reason attacking a BS. So i ran into middle of furball,and let loose with all Flak's. Under 1K range,and guess what. 4 kills in about 10 seconds(also all NPC's went red,butt in Texas no biggy). Many yelled unfair and other crap,but the Flaks work well if you can get in range,and no debris setting them off.
Also against another cap with no shields? Woo Hoo. Get in range and open up,and watch as all gear fall's off. Also tried this with a friend in game. Problem is useless against cap shields.Takes to much power.

I contest the fact that solaris turrets are useless against players in bombers. If you are flying a small sized and mobile battleship, solaris can be extremely useful.
Solaris battleships can be a real battle-winner if used correctly. They are area denial and a rally point. With a pair of snubs flying around deshielding bombers, you can use a solaris battleship to great effect by quickly changing targets, and evading the longer range supernovas by using strafe. They are also extremely effective against gunboats.
However, on the subject of flak turrets... I've yet to find a use for them aside from knocking nova torps off course, even then it's not reliable enough to use them. Kinda satisfying when it works though.
