House Police and Capital Ships - Praetyre - 02-03-2008

I voted yes, but a conditional yes. I think that the police should be allowed cruisers as flagships or very high end operations centres, but gunboats should be their highest ordinary level ships, used as low-middle grade operations centres.

None of the Houses are based on Middle-Eastern or African nations so, I don't think that should apply here.

First this is how I see the scale

Fighter=Squadcar

GB=Paddywagon, BombSquad, Swat Van, Light Helocopter, speedboat

Cruiser= Armored Personel Carrier, Helo(with Guns), Motorized Battering Ram

Scout Tank

Battleship= Main Tank, Mobile Artiliry, Gunships, Jets, Bombers,Naval Battleships

As to the decent point....The German police have some really badass equiptment, as does the LAPD, NYPD, British, and Israeli police. All big cities in the US have heavy equiptment, they don't use it much, mainly for large events or major incedents. During the 2000 Republican National Convention in Philadelphia, the Philadelphia police department used 3 light tanks and several armoured personnel carriers, as well as many helocopters. Officers had heavy assualt rifles and armour. This is just one example. Aside for that, I think that it is a false assumption to assume that the Governemnts that exist in Siruis are exactly the same as those that were on earth. These governemnts went through a hard time leaving Earth and getting set-up in Sirius. They have had to adapt to a harsher existance, and as on Earth today, the bigger the threat the police have to deal with, the more firepower they use.

Like wise it could be said that it is a false assumption to believe that the existing governments in Sirius are so different than our established governments that they would give a police force a Dreadnought.

House Police and Capital Ships - Praetyre - 02-03-2008

I see it as akin to this;

Fighter; Squad Car

Gunboat; Police Van (used for wiretaps and SWAT operations), APC

Armoured Transport; Paddywagon

Cruiser; Police Cruiser

why does everyone compare RL to FL. " oh well in RL" this isnt RL, this is FL, imo police ID should restrict to gb, if you really want to fly a cruiser or battleship, get a BAF ID, or Navy ID, or RM, KNF id.

Fly bombers if there is a capship problem, a bigger ship won't help much. And besides, a gb is quite good.

Well; I did say that "you don't see police driving tanks in real life" in the first post but, when just looking at Freelancer you don't see any House Police NPCs flying cruisers and battleships, only the House Militaries.

While House Police NPCs never fly anything bigger than a LF Mk2, limiting players to just those would be unfair so; yes, Police PCs would be able use bombers and/or gunboats against enemy capital ships.

EDIT: Praetyre - If cruisers would only be used by Police player factions; I'd be okay with it but, I doubt that would be the case.

House Police and Capital Ships - Doom - 02-03-2008

voted yes...

if police can fly in capital ships..what is the purpose of military or navy?

House Police and Capital Ships - Etaphreven - 02-03-2008

Yes.
You don't see police in RL flying F16s and driving M1 Abrams.

EDIT: In regards to other posts saying that the criminals use cruiser and other big stuff and the police needs to counter them... Well, no. That's what the bloody Navy is for. Even if there is no Navy online, doesn't mean you can buy a Cruiser and a BS just to WIN. The goal is RPing, not winning. Now, close the thread and redo the ID.
EDIT2: Doom said it better and shorter.

House Police and Capital Ships - I_m_rdy - 02-03-2008

Voted yes, too, though also only fighters and bombers can mean serious harm to any sort of ship (in the respective numbers, of course).

Yeah. In real life you mostly see them in cars. The use of Gunboats would be like the RL SWAT. Which is perfect. That's why at least GBs should be allowed.
