Other good ideas are to not try to ram a battleship in your starflier. The BS pilots can be touchy. Don't jump to the Guard systems until you have something a bit better than a VHF. Don't shoot the lawfuls until you join an unlawful faction. If an AI tells you to drop your cargo, it's a good idea to do so. It's easier than getting killed.
