Right, to begin, Suse is open source...ergo, you can get a brand new updated version for free, off the internet....and you can pass the software for free, again, there's no question of illegality there....As for better....I suggest a virgin user try ubuntu first. They're all going to suffer from the same DX limitations, and what is better really depends on what you want to do. They're all better than windows, in my opinion.

Oh, I didn't know about the open source thing. After searching a few sights, it seems Ubuntu is a little more user friendly. It also seems to have a better forum community and support.
I'm thinking I'll lean towards Ubuntu but I'm not quite sure how to install it. When I downloaded it onto my laptop, I clicked on the Live CD (I think that's what it was) and it said boot to CD to try Ubuntu without changing system settings.
So I tried to burn a cd but it didn't work. I'm not sure if that's how it's done. So I'm currently downloading it on the Computer that can burn cd's really fast.
So I'm wondering, it comes downloaded in a zip file. Do I unzip that? Then after unzipping just burn all of the files onto a CD? Then just stick it in the drive and it'll boot? Or is there a special way it has to be done. I'm just using a 700 mb CDR. I figure I burn the files into no subfolders on the CD.
I've never done anything like this before.. so any guides or tips on installing would be great. (Well before I install I want to preview it so I can tell if it will support my drivers etc)

Don't bother with Suse Linux Professional 9.2 from the year 2004 it's old and lacking of built in drivers for newer hardware. Download ubunto and give the dual boot a try. It's the most supported linux distro right now.

You have to burn it in a specific mode, should be specified in the ubunto web site.

I burned the image onto the CD and got my computer to boot from it. I do want to do a duel boot.
However.. after I hit "Start or Install Ubuntu" it does some loading then shows some random stuff ..
EXAMPLE:
*Loading blah blah [ok]
*Saving blah blah [ok]
etc.
CAT: [bigfileextionsion] No such directory.
CAT: [bigfileextionsion] No such directory.
CAT: [bigfileextionsion] No such directory.
*Saving VESA State.
-- Then it gets stuck on Saving Vesa state. The computer *thinking* light is not on or anything.

You probably need to partition your drives...
windows will treat it like a virus and do nasty things.

I would dual boot ubuntu and xp (Thats what I have)
as for ubuntu running xp/vista/mac programs, ask your friend what he did to get all of that working (I have wine which is a windows 2000/xp/vista emulator and have yet to get more than 1 program working)
oh and I was able to install directx on my machine, not sure if it worked as I have yet to get a game installed.

Well it's in the boot process. When you install it, I think it said that it will partition your drive for you if you choose the option. But it never gets to that option becuase it freezes first.
I may go and burn the Text iso image to see if that alternate option works.

They are going to end support for XP in a few months. Enjoy it while it lasts. It'll be the last of the good Windows products for now.

Have you looked at mandreeva? It is pretty awsome about hardware support but has limited windows compatibility. ubuntu is ok if you get the latest version.... but any software problem will bring it down fast.

Err.. do you mean don't change to windows?
Well here's my plan. I found a nifty little program called Wubi. It installs Ubuntu right off your desktop. You just choose how big you want the partition to be and your username and password and it installs. However.. it has to Re- Download the whole Ubuntu file. So I have to wait 2 and a half hours for this retartedly slow 73kb/s download.
It's still going now, I'll let you know how it turns out when it's done installing.
(It creates a XP/Ubuntu Duel Boot)
