I'm playing Eve and I didn't hear anything about the game becoming free to play. Do you have a link or something?
The current system works pretty well.
P.S. And yes, Eve IS pretty small. It just looks like a large place after Freelancer.

In their trailer, they talk about the butterfly effect, but when I played I felt like a minuscule grain of sand in the Sahara. This place is more my speed.
EVE online actually is one of the smaller MMO communities.
Even Perfect World has a larger playerbase.
