Wesley Richter - Zapp - 04-20-2008

News of a Military defector lit the news stations up like a Christmas tree. Well-dressed female reporters stood in front of random Wraths or Valkyries and talked about him leaving as if he had gone crazy and stolen a Wrath. Then various Military officers were interviewed, and they only gave vague assurances that Wesley would be brought to justice. It was quite amusing, sitting in a room on Darmstadt Depot, watching it all on a small screen, built for emergency use.

The IFF and transponder were both being re-installed to show LWB colors. At first the mechanics, and indeed, everyone on the base, had been a little cool in their reception. After a little meet-and-greet, things had warmed up, but it wasnt until he had flown his first combat mission that they truly began seeing him as a valuable resource. Alone, he had destroyed five Wraths single-handedly. He was phenomenal even better than before. His vision, reflexes, thought process, all were sharpened to beyond what a normal human had.

He had also worked out, more or less, what was going on. Apparently the Nomad object that had taken lodging in his ship was affecting him in some ways. It didnt stop at the sharpening the senses or making him stronger and faster, it also made him addicted like an Outcast to Cardamine to the presence of his ship. Every few hours he would have to be near it, or else he started getting massive headaches. This fact basically meant he could never stray too far from the landing pad he parked his ship on, limiting his freedom. This should have been disturbing to him, but he took it in stride, not feeling the loss of mobility.

The Wrath danced festively amongst the other Wraths, cannons blazing, wreaking death and destruction amongst its opponents. First spinning this way, then waltzing that, it was a master piece that appeared to be choreographed by one of the greatest experts well in advance, as if the very fate of this terribly magnificent dance was written beforehand, and being fulfilled to the slightest detail. Another fighter went up in flames, its venting atmosphere and oxygen feeding the inferno. Once that precious fuel was used up, the fire was vanquished, leaving nothing but charred scrap that was once a beautiful fighting ship.

Wesley was amazing. His hands flew across the controls, anticipating his enemys movements. There were four Wraths left, each flying as they apparently never had before, trying to match Wesley to such an extent that they were obviously going above and beyond even their own greatest expectations. And still it was not enough. Their efforts were all for naught, as one by one they were hunted down by the wolfhound that was Wesley, the wrecks of their ships disintegrating beneath an onslaught of experimental technology found deep in Wild space.

In about five minutes, he was the only ship flying. His hands shaking slightly, he set a course back to Darmstadt Depot. He had recently been allowed to have Guard status, wherein his IFF was changed to show his elite status. He was white, or even red, to the targeting computers of most other LWB ships. It was a great honor to be bestowed upon a Military defector so soon, which only showed the trust he had earned.

He had also been made an Advanced Scout, which meant he had free reign to move throughout Rheinland space, and even the Omegas if the situation warranted, to scan enemy installations and troop movement. The Hessians had also expressed interest in his jaunt into Wild space, though they saw him more as an invaluable tool in a war against Nomad-infested humans rather than just another soldier in the Military. It was a good feeling, being viewed as important.

Flight Log: April 23, 816 AS

Pilot: Wesley Richter

System: Stuttgart

It was an uneventful day. I held up a transport for 2 million credits, I flew with the Hessians some. Uneventful, until the RM showed up. Some banter occurred, and it became apparent that there was no changing their minds as to me being infected by Nomads. [sigh] Well, I ended up fighting both of them, and my first mine killed the first one. It took a while on the second one, but he died as well. I'm getting tired of being a fugitive... but no matter what they throw at me, I shall remain strong and free.

As time went on, Wesleys perceptions started to warp. Before, he was a kind man who very rarely resorted to pirating, but instead of was dedicated to the defense of his newfound brethren. Now, he was increasingly xenophobic, attacking transports for profit and pretty much anything that was even vaguely hostile. His attitude also went from that of a jovial young man to a dark and twisted shell of his former self. His posture, countenance, and manner completely changed, drawing on the more negative emotions.

He noticed these changes, but couldnt muster any will to care. All he knew was one vital truth: the Military was the chief enemy, and should be hunted. The Military had wanted to destroy his ship, and by extension himself, so it had to be annihilated. And so he went on his crusade, constantly throwing himself at the RM patrols that happened by him, and actively hunting and killing them.

As his kill number rose, so did his infamy among not only the LWB, but all Rheinland pirate factions. His name was whispered in corners as the Merciless Butcher, among other things, but no one dare take it above whispers. They knew that the rage could easily be turned on them, and anyways, wasnt it better to have someone like that on your side?

It was a fateful day when Wesley suited up to go pirate the lane between Planet Stuttgart and the New Berlin Jump Gate. He sat by the trade lane, his ship practically crouching as he waited for his prey to happen by. Lo and behold, a large train comes up, jarred out of the trade lane by the downed link. Wesley pounces, but is too slow as the train hits cruise. So he chased, all the way to New Berlin, and through the Jump Gate. On the other side, he repeats his hails to stop, but there was a Rheinland Military fighter. They engaged in brutal combat, the RMs Wraths Razor compensating for any disparity of skill. Soon, it was looking like it would be the final pass, Wesley out of nanobots, when with a scream of defiance he launched a mine. It slammed both ships, and twin detonations sent tiny shockwaves everywhere. Debris of one Wrath flew, but not enough for two

Some time later

Wesley woke up on Darmstadt Depot, in his Wrath. He distinctly remembered being shot down, but here his ship was; one-of-a-kind and irreplaceable. There wasnt any sign of battle damage. Upon trying to turn the engine on, it refused: energy levels were nil. What had happened? His ship had just transported across space and time. It was a tad unnerving, and he later learned that one second nothing was on the landing pad, and the next his ship appeared out of a haze of blue.

You can have the power.

Heartbeat

What? Yes, I want it

Heartbeat

Embrace it.

Heartbeat

Yes!

No.

Heartbeat

Part of you resists still.

Heartbeat

No, I want it! I want the power!

No, its wrong and evil!

Heartbeat

TAKE IT!

Wesley bolted upright from the position he had been sleeping in. He always slept in the cockpit of the Wrath now, more of compulsion than lack of proper quarters. It was the third night in the row he had had that dream, each time the side that denied the power grew weaker and more quiet. How much longer would it be until Wesley would be full consumed by the power? How much longer until the evil and hate ate him alive?

Is there a difference between the two?

As Wesley's Wrath set down on Darmstadt's landing pad reserved for him, he slammed his fists on the dashboard. He had only gotten 3, and besides that was the only ship to survive the fight. RM -- and KNF! -- everywhere, defending a convoy that was carrying the parts for Krieger's Cruiser. At least he had gotten Walter Krupinski this time without blowing himself up... but it was small condolence.

When he arrived, it was the tail end of the battle. Only 3 or so Hessians remained, and one blew up as soon as Wesley engaged. Soon, he was forced to retreat as the last man standing, which is when a Reaver threw himself at the RM/KNF joint forces. Only four fighters pursued Wesley to the Frankfurt - Dresden JH, which is when Wesley decided to slam the brakes and do a quick engine kill, ripping the shields off of a random Wrath and punctuating it with a nuke mine that annihilated him.

The Reaver went down about then, which put the combined might of about 8 fighters on Wesley. Running again, this time all but two fell off -- Walter and Lukas. At the Dresden JH, Wesley turned and engaged again, finishing Lukas off much the same as he had the first ship he had downed. After a fierce fire-fight, Walter went down too.

Wesley was fuming, and planning how he could get even with the RM after this loss...

Wesley sat in his cockpit, head staring at his hands that were palms up in his lap. They were shaking uncontrollably. He had been shot down again, for all his skill brought down by too many enemies and not enough allies. This time the transition between shot down and back on Darmstadt had been more vivid, as in he was conscious. The inside of his ship had turned shades of blue, and then he had been in a different system, almost. The entire place looked like the inside of a sphere, with a huge thing an island, almost in the distance. And there was another one of those triangle things. Nomads had flown everywhere, along with a few of their human drones.

It had been the scariest moment of Wesleys life. He had kept thinking to himself, over and over, please take me back, please take me back, just let me die It had eventually transitioned the same way, after floating, as if gaining energy for another jump. Once in Darmstadt, Wesley thought long and hard. How much of him was still human? What was he changing to? A Nomad-infested freak? Something else, something more? He was changing, that was for sure. He could feel it, feel the rising power, the increasing rage, and his body almost wasting away, needing proximity to his ship more and more to sustain him.

This frightened Wesley more than anything else, and for the first time in a long time, he started wondering if hed ever see his mom again

The mechanics found him in his ship in the fetal position, crying.

While en-route to the rendezvous point for the raid on the convoy for Krieger's Cruiser, Wesley was accosted by an RFP Phantom. Instead of asking for Wesley to give himself up, however, he asked for Wesley to give his ship up, most odd as Wesley is perhaps the most wanted man in Rheinland. When Wesley, slightly confused at the oddness of the officer, refused, a short fight ensued. Outgunned, the police officer was destroyed. Wesley continued on his way to Brucshal and the Hessians.

Wesley Richter - Zapp - 06-02-2008

Rallying at Brucshal, the Hessians, Wesley, and one Bundschuh fighter launched to intercept the convoy. As luck would have it, they were late and quickly switched to an attack in Hamburg, using the nearby jump hole. Waiting by the trade lane, soon the Rheinland Military escort providing a screen for a few transports. A fierce battle ensued, Wesley being a key part of the pirate offensive. Soon enough escorts were down where the weight of their fire wouldnt crush any pirates attacking the transports, and they were quickly shot down. The remaining escort ships were mopped up in due course, and two Hessian ships and Wesley limped away from the battle.
