Please help computer noob! - Hyperion - 04-13-2008 As i can see this is youre PC: Motherboard: MSI MS-7211-140 MSI VIA PM8M3-V, 6CH Audio, LAN, VGA (S3 32mb) 800 FSB 8X AGP , 2xPCI, 2xDDR400, 2xSATA CPU: Intel Celeron D 336, 2800 MHz VGA: Integrated S3? Ram: Samsung DDR 256Mb, 400Mhz If you would like to have more ram, and a better vga, than i would say 2x512Mb Samsung (400Mhz) and for vga: geforce 6-7 series with agp and for the cpu, just overclock it to 3.5-3.6Ghz :) edit: or you can get a new cpu too (Intel P4 3.4 Ghz -- it is realy cheap) Please help computer noob! - Equinox - 04-13-2008 Thanks, that actually brings me to something else I was going to ask, how do you overclock? Also does the ram I get need to be Samsung made? Please help computer noob! - Hyperion - 04-13-2008 No, you can buy a different too. I only said it, because you have a samsung right now:) overclocking: 1-enter youre setup 2-find where you can set the CPU voltage and freq. 3-change them acctulay most of the CPU-s can be overclocked +20% without touching the voltage. the current is 21x133 (=2800Mhz) change the 133 to 162, and you will have 3.4Ghz if you can start windows (no blue death, etc), than run a few CPU stability test (link) for more tuning, you need to change the voltage too in short, this is all:) Please help computer noob! - Hyperion - 04-13-2008 and before i forget, if you set the freq to high, maybe youre pc will not even start than you need to clear the cmos you can do that with this: ![]() just plug the jumper from pos. 1-2 to 2-3, leave there for 60 sec, plug it back to the original place, and you can start the pc Please help computer noob! - Boss - 04-13-2008 Wow. That system is a bit old! As Hyperion said, overclock the CPU. That alone will boost performance. However: If you do, GET NEW RAM! You have a single 256MB stick in there. The Celeron steals from the RAM, so you're gonna want to get some new stuff. For now, you could just get a single 256 again and save there. The video card I would advise is this one here. End price is USD $18.99, very good for an EVGA card. I know it's only an FX5500, but that's what I used for several years. Very good card, the reviews are very positive. Please help computer noob! - Equinox - 04-13-2008 Yeah it is pretty old, thanks for the tips guys..:) Hyperion, when you say "enter your setup" to overclock it what do you actually mean? which setup? you have to go through it slowly for computer noobs like me..:P Thanks again for all the help everyone, going to pick up some ram and a video card tomorrow..:) Please help computer noob! - Hyperion - 04-13-2008 when you start the PC, hit the "delete" button numerus times, after this, you will enter the motherboards setup. this button can change, depending on the motherboard (like F2, or some other button) but in case of youre MSI board, it will be "delete" and when you exit this setup (and you changed the cpu clock) be sure to save it --> exit with F10 Please help computer noob! - Boss - 04-13-2008 EDIT: Hyperion got to it first. Please help computer noob! - Equinox - 04-13-2008 Thanks guys, going to try it out. Please help computer noob! - McNeo - 04-13-2008 Dont destroy your computer... I kinda did, and now the motherboard is conducting electricity to the backplate ... but apart from that and the odd BSOD, it works fine. Seriously though, do your research about overlclocking before you attempt anything more than a small overclock. I dont want you to destroy that computer, though its in dire need of being shipped off to the dump ... |
