There was a small community of mappers and roleplayers in SC2. Dunno if its still around ,but they had some pretty clever maps that pretty much allowed you to have an editor ingame.

I found a colleague that likes boardgames.
I find them boring but he is really fan.I guess it could suit you.
Discovery is more or less shooter with setmsgs. It suits me. The forum is fun to tease the kids around while get bored at work and indeed there are couple of good story writers.

I am part of a WC3 map making Community which is also involved in SC2 modding... But an RTS game isn't much of a Role-playing atmosphere... At least, not to the same potential as an actual RPG, like Freelancer. (And yes, i know Freelancer is a shooter, but still RP, given all the possibilities it offers.)

How about a Typical "MMORPG" just get a whole bunch of us on 1 RP server and get cracking examples: Doungeons and Dragons Online , LOTRO, SWTOR, and plenty more
