I've got to add, that at first I didn't meant to write it for this contest, but since it fit the theme and to give the judges more to read - I decided to submit it.
Even though it's just ~700 words and the the story has an abrupt beginning and an open ending, which was intended and also reflects my understanding of a short story - I hope it meets the requirements.

Erroneous Cognition
Originally, this one was not meant to participate in the contest, but seeing as it meets all requirements, I see no reason why I shouldn't give it a shot. It's a bit lengthy and stretches the 5k word limit by approx 70 words, I hope nobody minds. Enjoy reading, critical feedback is always welcome.
