Very funny, go discover a mod, which didn't get an update since almost a year. Bhoo****te if toy ask me.
But yeah, some places in Disco are fun to find if you don't know they exist from the start. So - go get the equipment you need, how ya find it I don't care, but don't explore using any programme. It's a bad spoiler and I found out the hard way.

Right... I have both. And there's a setting in FL Companion that says "Don't use jump gates that are closed" or something.

FL Companion is not an add-on or a mod, so it shouldn't be considered a cheat. It is simply a tool, similar to a calculator. And like a calculator, you should be adept at the basics. To those who use it to find their trade route, they've already earned their experience in the universe and are able to use it to its full potential. However, those who have never explored and used FL Companion normally get blown up, or fined for contraband. It's a fair trade off, the inexperienced thinking they can make a quick buck rarely leave a system in one piece.
I use FL C for my trade routes and I know what I can transport safely, what would get me killed/arrested, and where and where not to go. That sort of info can only be gained by traveling and asking your fellow traders.
