New House? - Praetyre - 05-24-2008 Liberty is made up of the United States and probably Puerto Rico as well. It likely has a Jeffersonian model of government, but not the same exact constitution. The only hard data we have is; The Alliance-Coalition war took about 100 years It has been 816 years since the Liberty arrived on Manhattan. So, you could be right. @Dopamino; Rumours, as their name implies, do not constitute evidence. These developer documents have never been stated as canonical and directly contradict what we know to be canonical (the intro), as I have shown with both a link and a screenshot of the intro itself. New House? - Klaw117 - 05-24-2008 The ext. intro probably didn't want to include the other 3 ships because then the intro wouldn't flow well. Think about it, we see 8 ships launch and the narrator says their names. Then we see 3 blow up and the narrator says three ships didn't make it. Then the remaining 5 escape. I really can't think how that would flow well. Even if we changed the dialogue of the narrator, I don't think it would flow well or sound as good as it does now. Therefore, they probably left out the 3 ships except for the Malta rumor. The ships weren't important or part of the story anyway, so the narrators just left it out to make the intro sound better. Also, someone said that a lot of stuff was cut due to time or money issues with Microsoft, so they probably just put this intro in without taking more time to add info about the other ships. Maybe if they had more time, they could show what had really happened. New House? - Praetyre - 05-24-2008 That seems extremely contrived.. they went to the trouble of illustrating Sol's fate at the hands of the Slomon K'Hara, even though Sol is completely irrelevant to the game, and the escape of an officer who probably died along the way or was disbelieved.. in fact, we see the sleepers under attack.. you'd think, if there were 8, they'd show them being blown up before the other 5 left. It says "in desperation, the Alliance launched 5 sleeper ships.". The in-universe POV of it is Atticus Rockford's, who as an actual witness and participant in the war I would trust far more than a bartender spouting off rumours about wars centuries before his time. If it says there were 5, names them and shows them, I think the solution best in line with Occam's Razor is that there were only 5, and that the idea there were 3 that we never see and that Atticus forgot to mention seems overly complicated, silly and violates Occam's Razor, as it invokes many assumptions, whereas Occam's Razor dictates the theory invoking the fewest assumptions is generally correct. New House? - Dopamino - 05-24-2008 1. The Sleeper Ships weren't launched from Earth 2. There are 7 more planets and countless Pluto-sized rocks from which other sleeper ships could have launched from 3. Occam is assuming a lot by saying that... New House? - Klaw117 - 05-24-2008 When did this debate start up again anyway? I thought we agreed that we could have our own opinion...whatever. If Igiss goes with the 8 sleeper ship story (which it looks like he will), then fine, we'll end up using that for the Discovery history. If Igiss goes with the 5 sleeper ship story, then that will become our official history. Basically, it's all up to Igiss. He'll make the shots for this. New House? - jshkornmiller - 05-24-2008 Well, The alliance could of launched more ships after launching the first 5, thinking that maybe the other 5 would somehow get destroyed, they launched more ships. Or other nationalities thought "hey, you selfish bastards, what about our kind?" and launched their own sleepers. think, France, Brazil, South Africa. Isreal, Egypt? could be more to think of, " 20 years after the first 5 sleepers went out to find new homes, humans almost utterly destroyed. launched the last surviving humans from different ethnic groups to Sirius sector. , my idea, what you all think? New House? - Yngen - 05-24-2008 ' Wrote:And the house's name... big unknown and I'm having very few ideas what it could be. Provence? Was thinking on that myself. Provence is a good possibility. How about Bourgese? One looks at how the other houses were named and one gets the sense of primitivism, or perhaps going back to a culture's roots. Liberty was the ideal that sparked the American revolution (Liberty or death...) Bretonia I suppose harkens back to British clan systems before the Normans invaded. Reinland refers to the Rhine river upon which ancient Germans first built their villages. Hispania is obvious---but the two houses that came from that ship didn't get named after it. The Corsairs took on a name that loosely means 'pirate,' and ironically refers back to 14th century FRENCH pirates who's native government turned a blind eye to because they were weakening Frances enemies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corsair.) Knowing that, it makes more sense to call the new French house the Corsairs and rename the existing Hispanics living on Crete the 'Conquistadors.' Will never happen, but hey, Microsoft messed up plenty of other items in this game. The Kusari name is a bit vague as well. 'Kusari' translates to 'chain,' as far as I can tell. How this relates to the in habitants of the Kusari systems is beyond me. 'Chain' could refer to ancient martial arts weapons that involved chains...or could merely refer to the 'chain' of planets in Kusari. I don't know enough about the Japanese to even venture a guess. Naming the French faction "Provence" actually adds to the whole Corsair/Greek angle if we remember that the actual Provence region of France is the extreme Southeast portion of the country where the Romans first conquered outside Italy. There could be some juicy relationship between the existing Corsairs of Sirius and the newly reunited 'Provencels.' On the whole it could be a bold and ambitious project. If done well it could further develop the existing factions in Discovery while introducing something new and exciting all at the same time. Intertwine the stories and write in events that bring together as many factions as possible...then you'd really have something. New House? - Dusty Lens - 05-24-2008 *looks at Yngen's post, begins to applaud* I have nothing to say beyond bravo for putting out such a well written reflection! New House? - Generation - 05-24-2008 Thats a good idea, but another way of doing it is to say that the alliance originally built 8 but only 5 where ready for launch when the launch date came around. Or maybe it was decided that the remaining 3 would be launched at a latter date and like you said, in case the original 5 got blown up.. New House? - Linkus - 05-24-2008 In relation to the idea of 20 years after the original sleeper ship launch, they launch more - Sol was destroyed. Very little, if anything, survived. 5 sleeper ships were contructed and launched, we know that for definate. Perhaps the other 3 weren't ready to launch etc. In the end, the French are coming to Sirius. Perhaps a secret sleepership as suggested? After all, the Nomad's were a secret originally. |
