Disco's just been desperate, I guess. A lot less people playing, a lot less people to fill Official Factions' ranks. So the first thing to do would be to swarm like vultures the unsuspecting prey in the Welcome thread with a plethora of reasons why their faction is better and why he should be joining it.

I doubt if he made it this far (to actually bother to make a forum account and say hello, I know I didn't back in .84) he'll have any trouble clicking on the Factions forum to check things out.

Also as SnakThree has pointed out - shoveling your faction down their throat instantly at the greeting seems like an advertisement more than a welcome. Especially if 6 posts in a row are all about that.

Wouldn't say it's bad to the point it should be moderated, but I'd say it's bad etiquette, unless the person specifically asked to be bombarded with biased advertisements.

As a former faction leader I'm all sorts of biased, but I really like factions advertising and trying to go get newbies and bring them into the fold.

That being said, while I'm sure the "don't join x, they suck" comments are sarcastic ribbing (right guys?), it may not be taken that way, and it certainly isn't a "best foot forward" situation. I'll be keeping an eye on the welcome section of the next few weeks. Please keep the focus on the new member, not on derogatory comments about another faction or person, whether in jest or not.

I'm not going to deny I have expressed a factions strong points in the welcome section. Although the person that I did (Strongly) recommend to join said faction listed details on what he wanted from a faction; of course a lot of factions will have similar strong points but I feel that telling a new player where to find what he's looking for is the right thing to do. A few people have commented on me 'advertising' in a sarcastic way but it's meant as a joke. It's fine to 'advertise' however the comments against other factions I think have to stop.

I don't see a problem with it.

If the player is really new, it gives them a sort of leg up and a chance to be around others who will be able to teach them how to play the game. If the player doesn't want to join, so be it.

Way I see it, you should never look a gift horse in the mouth. Opportunity is opportunity, whether the new player wants it or not. I think Nevader's welcome thread is a perfect example; a faction invited him, he declined because he already has plans. Everyone wins.

teacup, storm. storm, teacup.

don't worry about this, it's teasing, not a flamewar. it shows the new player that everyone is friendly, even though they are in other factions.

Nah just restrict the high-end stuff.
Everything above GB, Battletransports and 5kers for Faction only use buy giving official factions separate IDs that would be requirement to fly off base like the scanner/engines are.
After this the server would fix itself within a year.

Faction advertising among new players never worked and wont work because there are two type of players.
The one that informed themselves about rules and factions and joined whatever they liked and the one that we call "indies". The fun thing is that the most "indies" never register in the forum.

This comes after I tried really hard, investing a lot of time and efforts for extended period of several months to advertise Mollys.
Mollys in that time gave you option to mine/pirate/smuggle and bounty hunt siriuswide and gives free access to 40 fully kitted shared ships of all kinds.
Also I enforced low RP requirements, wrote a basic PvP and RP guide and offered PvP training each week featuring good PvPers as trainers. The only real requirement was to be active and to follow the server rules.
Even this huge efforts seemed not to be good enough in order to have constant flow of new players into the faction and keeping it on lets say 5-8 days activity per month.

The second type of players are not fixable without harsh restrictions.
