Yes, I also think that vanilla modulated looks good. Space should be darker than it is now but not too dark either (no StarWars dark) because it gets boring.

Is it possible to retain the contrast of the modulated one while adding a bit warm tint to the non black & white color? (Think of the colors from SWWT's starsphere)

well even if every system (as far i know) has at least one sun and we are in clouds most the time, Space is dark so a darker moody one is allways preferable at least in my opinion.
anyway i always play with a bit darker gamma adjusts.
