I would suspect pirates would have a bargaining chip for ransom or Revolutionaries such as Council or Coalition would have a morale victory to parade and gain more support over.

If the GRN acquire it, then the event ends.
As I already said, since the GRN cannot benefit from capturing the diamond (and not making the event too easy - selling the item in the same system), they will be given an alternative way to earn money. Such as a kill-reward of 5 mil per kill.
And the point of the event IS that non-gallics acquire it. Read the description.

The event lasts for 2 hours. If the time runs out, both the sellpoint and item is removed from the server.
