Your thinking way too much about boats here. And not realy taking into account planes and such. I think of the cap ships like boats and carriers. And i think of the fighters/bombers like the Planes.

And actually in Sins of a Solar Empire, nearly every ship avalable is a capital ship. Fighters can only be built in small squads in that game, and are typically only used in defense....though the could be deployed on carriers
Basically.... SoSE is about cap ships, not nessisarily every other game
Homeworld is a better analogy I think. You can build fighters, corvettes, frigates, etc. And you can win with only fighters, but it takes some skill and luck. But you would want to send a capital ship into the bigger fights as a heavy hitter and a bullet magnet:P

NOT SINS OF A SOLAR EMPIRE!! IT SUCKS!!
Well it isn't that bad, just abit boring, and by the time i have a big army of ships the NPCs have a BIGGER one!!
But i get around just fine in a fighter or bomber, the only reason i fly caps now is for role-play.
And also with SoSE every ship available is a capship, the only way to get fighters and bombers is from them being built by capships.

i don't really care about that.
I fly only capital ships, all thou i like the bombers i hate being harassed by NPCs,
hence the reason why flying capital ships is the only valid form for me.

It's a game...who bloody cares what you fly or not, or even what you think everyone should fly? Just use what you enjoy and roleplay, adhere to the rules and you'll have fun and everyone else will have fun.

Okay back to the point, freelancer is about fighters to do the fighting, capitol ships are more of the heavy hitters in the big conflicts and as HQ's. Battleships are really mobile bases that act as carriers and Uber heavy hitters, they are not highly mobile remember

Cap spawns are around major bases.
Fighter spawns are system wide.
For every cruiser there's a hundred fighters running around.
Something about modern US Navies and the fall of Russia.
