It probably wouldn't need a new skin... it's only MOX...
A tiny black mark on the surface would be all the change to the planet.
Sure, millions upon millions could have died... but planets are tougher than people.
Look at the area around Chernobyl today. It's full of life. That didn't take long at all. Lots of people died, but things continued.
