Because of the shield regeneration its' impossible to calculate the "EHP" or whatever. Different ships have different shields which take different times to recharge. So you have to take into account the length of a battle, the number of times they use Batteries, and if their shields are strong or weak against their opponents weapons. You simply can't calculate that sort of thing. And I can guarantee you my LF would have more survivability than your Battleship.

ive been in quite a few engagements as a VHF, I'm not making this crap up. You CAN add the regeneration to the EHP, but it really is beyond the scope of this. When I am under fire, my shield regeneration fails me misserably, bots and bats are far mor important.

Not accusing you of anything, just saying it's impossible to calculate. Bigger ships are easier to hit in group engagements, while smaller ships and ships with faster turning are harder to hit. In one on one engagements size plays less of an importance, and ability to strafe and aim becomes more important. In a skill-based game you simply cannot apply maths to these situations. There are too many factors to consider and skill is not a measurable quantity.
Your shield may fail you miserably, but in large group engagements mine goes largely untouched. That is something you can't put a number on.

you are right pvp is extremely unpredictable, today we were helping the corsairs repel a BHG siege on crete, I was in a VHF and managed to destroy a bomber before suddenly and out of nowhere everyone shot me.

However, for pve it works nicely too, and skill is immeasurable, but I believe it mentions tanking by maneuverability in there somewhere. The omni tank is the application of all possible tanks.

The problem is in Freelancer there is no "hull tank" or "shield tank" or "evasion tank". Everyone is a so-called "Omni-tank". Personally I wouldn't even call it tanking at all. Tanking denotes drawing attacks towards yourself and absorbing the hits so that your weaker party members can DPS. NPCs target people at random, and players are more likely to kill the easier opponents first. This makes so-called 'tanking' in Freelancer irrelevant. Freelancer is not an MMORPG, we don't have "Tanks, Mages, DPS and Healers." The best method of defense is evasion, but when that fails you have your shield, and when that fails you have your hull. Every ship in the game, including battleships, fly on the same game mechanic. Battleships are basically over-glorified fighters, and even they are capable of evasion to a certain extent.

very true, but a battleship is a lot less likely to dodge that razor than a fighter after all. The battleship relies more on its EHP to survive, while the fighter can use EHP and manauver. If I leave my well set up VHF sitting in a field, NPCs will eat it alive. However, if I take a starflier and do the same they eat it much faster. That means EHP is still relevant as a factor of the static damage you an absorb. Basically, if your not doing anything, you have X EHP you can take.

Unfortunately Battleships are an oddity in this situation. But none the less EHP still does not apply. It denotes that anyone capable of dealing enough DPS to be greater than that of a Battleships EHP can win a fight. The difference between an RPG and a Skill based game is that statistics mean virtually nothing. You could take your VHF into a field of NPCs and die much faster than me in my Starflier. "Doing Nothing" Simply cannot apply, combat is fast paced and ever moving, ships do not simply sit still and fire upon one another to see which is the superior ship. Freelancer is not that kind of game.

anyone CAN though, disregarding skill anyone who has the DPS to break someone can kill them.:yahoo:

Disregarding skill in a skill based game is like disregarding strategy in an RTS or TBS. Or Disregarding level and skills in an RPG. It's simply not a factor you can dismiss.
