' Wrote:For all you traders saying your ships are defenseless, or dont have enough firepower, ask yourself one question... are you flying a 5000 unit transport? If the answer is yes, then you have answered your question. The 5000 unit transports are sitting ducks, and they are supposed to be.... you give up defense for all that cargo space. I have three trade ships, 2 BW trans and a Big Dragon, I can handle most lone opponents, whether is be taking on a bomber or fighter, or getting away from a GB. I give up cargo space for defense, thats the trade off that I make. I also have 2 Raba's and a Ptrans that I use for cargo piracy, so I know it doesnt take a bomber or gb to take down a transport. Balance your risk and reward when picking a ship to trade in, I advise against the Super Transports.
Well said, Zelot. There is a reason I don't fly a ZBT and that's it. If you are flying one, you may as well have the IFF of "Pirate me!"

I too fly a BW transport with cap armor. Sure, I'll give a fight in it but I don't last long. With everyone carrying a SNAC nowadays, freight pilots are grossly overmatched 1 v 1 and more often than not, I see many a pirates working in pairs. If you don't believe me, fly through California! Also, many pirates use gunboats.
The best course of action? Escorts! Take a million less and hire some firepower to go with you. If you're in a faction, they usually do. If no escort, some pirates will be reasonable with some RP.

As to the question of credits, it's been covered. Xenos are out to stop foreign shippers....period! One faction is solely built for stopping shipping in and out of Kusari and they do a great job of it. It's not really an issue of money as it is disrupting economy.

As for piracy itself, I see more and more pirates and less and less of everything else. I suppose it doesn't help when Hollywood glorifies pirates.

Fly in convoys.

you know what i have the most trouble taking down in my roc?

pirate trains. i keep hitting the turrets with my supernova.

anyways, i cant comment on the situation discribed untill a few more facts are thrown out in the open. such as what you were hauling, and who was pirating you.

It doesn't matter what I was hauling and as far as who was pirating me, I didn't put their name in on purpose, so as they don't have to suffer the consequences of my post.

As far as the ship I was flying, it was a Firefly transport, just about as big cargo wise as a Freelancer ID'd char can fly (3600 cargo), which by the way puts a Shire well out of range.

I was flying a Borderworlds Trans prior to getting the Firefly, but it doesn't travel too well in asteroid fields.

On a side note, what is the best trans (up to 3600 cargo) to get defence wise?

Freelancer arent supposed to fly the best transports?

Pointless piracy... - reavengitair - 09-01-2009

Well of course they are not, they are freelancers.

Don't think the container transports are invincible too - They are not.

Try going for small size + weapons + armor.

Think "Raba".

LoL Els, the *best* transport would probably be outside the FL ID cargo range anyway.

I'm just looking for an opinion on what the best transport inside that range would be defense wise, heck I'm even considering moving my Trader from a Freelancer ID to a Smuggler ID on the outside chance I can get my hands on a Ptrans.

BTW, I'm not a 'power trader', just trying to trade enough to keep my other ships in credits for repairs etc and have a bit left over for when I see one of those 'must have' ships that ocassionally pop up.

Hmm...

You could try the ptrans, although lawfuls will kill you.

You could try the house transports, big dragons, fireflies, etc.

My simple rules for Piracy

1) I'm going to get pirated

2) If I can't pay the pirates, I'm going to get blown up

3) Even if I don't get blown up, I might lose my cargo anyway

4) Have at least enough cash on hand to buy a replacement cargo

5) Know the closest spot to buy said replacement cargo

6) Don't buy a cargo that costs more than I'm prepared to lose.

Pirate Transport for Smugglers/Freelance Smugglers
9 Guns, 100k+ Armor and 3400 units is Win.
I have access to 3 and love flying each one of them.

BW Transports and Firefly are your best bets if you want 3000+ cargo for a Freelancer Lawful trader with good defense

You know...The most survivable transport is the Gull, when you strafe up and down, left and right...
