In most occassions I would vote NO because I am paranoid and wait to be shot just in case someone 'kicks off' and trys to get me sanctioned, so I often respond with my own engagement notice just in case but generally depends on the character I am playing

If I am in my Xeno sadly about all I seem to get from the numerous people is Engagin Xeno, so at this point I tend to wait for a shot then defend, several times I have attempted to RP after the notice proves pointless and usually ends up in my defeat. When faced with Groups of characters, Navy etc I generally try to continue the RP until they open fire, and they do too.

When I am playing a lawful I will always attempt to RP even If I am giving an engagemnt notice until I am shot at, unless there is an unlawful group and on this occassion I believe surprise is the best option so once they have given there intention to engage I will sometimes open fire, really depends on the level of RP beforehand and you can usually judge thier intentions

Generally find a lot of traders will open fire on you as a pirate for just asking them to cut thier engines, no notice etc but have no issue with this

So to clarify I think it really depends on the situation, characters, level of RP etc

Well, voted YES, but I usually shout out something like "Look! They're shooting at us" "I've noticed!" in case of Hourinmaru. But that is already in thruster curving around. Sometimes we RP more, sometimes I just kill the other guy then...

Also, I voted yes because imagine you don't know /setmsg. Or you do but you hit the wrong number, so instead of "Fire, fire, FIRE!" you shout out "I just -love- peanuts" and then start shooting ^^

But, I don't think it's good to start shooting at the same moment as the enemy yells "Enghaginnn'!" Some people tend to do first EK turn first and engage afterwards, so that their prey / future killer could get ready enough...

Just give a line back that you'll be opening fire otherwise people with that much RPing (unless you've been talking for a while) will complain how you did not give any notice back when they lose.

If someone would threaten me with 'Opening fire on target <insert my character name here>' but I would never receive a single shot, I would RP out of the situation. No need to get a pointless blue message.

IF he/she/it has not fired yet, I would add to the role play a lil at least & say something like "Bring it you son of a xeno dog!" then go guns blazing
But thats just me:)

If he said you're dead and he's engaging generally, you can fire first, ofcourse. But that doesn't mean you -Have- to attack. But I'ld say you have every right to blast him.
