I honestly believe that if you're going to play in an ENGLISH server with an ENGLISH playerbase, you should have a basic knowledge of the english language.

And read the rules.

Call me cruel, but I agree with Corsair. If for whatever reason you cannot RP... what the heck are you doing here?

Frankly, Disco is the last bastion of good, well populated Freelancer servers - the only other half-decent server I know of is the Hamburg City one, and it's 90% German speaking and almost totally Vanilla - great if you're German, not so great if the only language you have any grasp of is English. Of those Disco servers, some 80% are RP and those that aren't are "fun" servers - in other words, servers where you start with a fortune and don't actually get to have any fun. People like myself respect and partake of the RP, but given a choice would much rather play the same Freelancer mod on a non-rp server. However, that's not an option and so we do our best to fit in and try not to "toe the line" too much and upset the locals.

Those of you who really do consider yourself "RP Evangelists" really should at least attempt to be a little more considerate towards the new fish. Sure, when someone cruises into New York in a Bretonian Battleship with no tags nor license and starts singing Rule Britannia in all caps, then get stuck in. For the minor infractions a little tolerance, leniency and advice would go an awful long way. Remember that no matter what we do to encourage people to come to the forums, they'll go into the game first and only perhaps end up ever looking at the rules at all.

The other thing to remember is that people who are new to RP feel like an absolute tit when they're doing it. It seems corny, unnecessary and demeaning - try to give them a break and make them feel more comfortable instead of jumping on them and asking why their here - the answer to that is pretty self explanatory.

Just my two cents as a newbie trying to fit into what for me is an alien world.

Are you kidding?

These "lolwuts" are not humans. They are out to destroy the server and the community and everything else that the official factions built in this world. Everything.

Each one must be destroyed by fire. All their guns stripped. Their non-english tongues silenced. Their IP registered to the forums. We must take their capital ships away from them. Or we will face utter destruction.

(Since it is a game and all.)

Consider your self quoted.

On this subject, yes I feel bad aswell trying to explain the rules to them, and getting this sort of thing back.
Cheer up.
I have a laugh.

Pirate in system chat: ME NO ENLISHG!!!!!!!
*Five minutes later*
Me: "Hello pirate."
Pirate: "10 mil or death"
Me: Sir, can we bargain with you?
Pirate: U PAY!!!!

Me: "NOOO ME WANTS LIFE!!!"
Pirate: "fire death"

You have a good point. But when I say cannot RP, I mean cannot. It's one thing to try and kinda not be good at it. That's pretty much me in a nutshell. What I was specifically referring to was people who don't speak English or... do stupid stuff like fly their Corsair Battleship (or whatever) into New York or Omicron Alpha and then jabber about n00bs and such.

As long as you realise it is a sarcastic satire of the extremity of viewpoints.

If you feel like that on their first try (I know I did), you should take a break for about a week (or get banned for 7 days, essentially it's same thing) and see if you miss RP'ing(I know I did) If you don't, then the "door" is thataway.

To coin a phrase, I did lol!

Personally I got over that skittishness quite quickly by throwing myself straight into a faction with a stereotype I'm intimately familiar with - Bretonian Armed Forces. It was merely my first few days freelancing it that felt wrong, as I had no basis from which to attempt RP'ing.

Having been immersed now for a little over a week, I'm happy that I had no choice but to join an RP server. The fact remains though that especially with new players, unless they want to sit in Liberty on a battleship with oodles of cash to spare, their only choice is an RP server and unless there's a non-RP discovery server we'll consistently see these problems arise.

One more point: The main issue in this thread is the language barrier, and it kind of saddens me that we treat the server as English only. I'd quite like to be pirated by a genuine RPing Russian pirate for example, or hit Berlin on my trader and see people actually talking German. Of course we can argue that freelancer is a single language game from an RP perspective, but it's not outwith the realms of possibilities that groups like the Unioners would be looking to bring back the old language, or that the Mollies would be jabbering away in Gaelic.

If some way could be found of utilising the language barrier as opposed to penalising over it, I think Discovery would benefit. It would also make highlighting the "lolwuts" a much clearer affair.

I entirely agree with you.
