There -is- the special op ID... But like Cannon said it kinda sucks.
I think a new kind of scanner might fit the bill. Basically an adv. Cargo scanner similar to the BS license. That way they can keep their base ID.

If its really needed... Make a bright shiny golden sphere / halo that encompasses the said specialRP Ship that is ioncrossed onto the ship by an admin.
On a more serious note, make an item of any kind, Scanner, thruster, ID, whatever. Make it UNLOOTABLE (Meaning: You die, It Doesnt Drop, even if its unequipped)

I don't like the Special Operative ID because it replaces your actual ID, and more often than not, people are left unsure. If anything, we should add something similar to the armor upgrade that does nothing and just indicates that the person can use special equipment.

Even though at some point in time I'll probably want some special dispensation for a character I'm planning, I don't see the point of what you're suggesting. If you see a ship that looks weird then at some later point in time you check the forums. If it's slightly off then there will be a backstory, if it's really off then it's in the "Special RP" section.
And if you're going to interact with him which is, you know, the entire ****ing point of playing, then you'll find out what the story is anyways: he/she may even have the backstory/SRP post URL on a chat-hotkey.
What's the big deal ?

Thing is, not everyone has such a thing. And notice how long the URL is? Can't copypasta inro FL, and anyway, it'd be somewhat OORP, isn't it? Most special RPs are top secret and such, they won't fly around saying ''Here are my documents, www.dicoverygc.com/wallofgiberrish''. And most of times, it's just the people being plain OORP.
EDIT: Special OP ID is good enough as it is, no need to repair something that ain't broke.

I'll ignore the fact that this was necro.
In a world where children love to buy big ships because they are big, regardless of 'backstory' which you are so clearly in love with, some differentiation between good and bad may be necessary. That's the big deal, just small.
