I use Nod 32, never has failed me.

First things first... discard IE and use Firefox. That will correct 90% of the risks of the Internet.

Then, look for a good antivirus. Best would be to check many forums to see which one performs better. I don't like AVG, as it tends to ruin the windows installation.
Same for firewall. Don't use XP firewall, it sucks badly. In fact, better disable it and look for a 3rd party solution.

For spyware, never EVER use windows defender or any Microsoft security software. They only protect you against those malware that it's not from Microsoft or one of their allies, like gator for example.

Mcafee's a bitch. I tried to Remote Assistance to another guy's computer, and it shut down the connection. It takes up about 100MB of RAM, takes forever to scan, and the people that have it normally hate it. The problem is, it keeps everything out.

I use AVG, works fine for me.

Macafee although the bastard king of the universe. Is one of the best Anti-Virus/Firewalls I have ever had. I get at least 5 hack attempts on my comp everyday and they are blocked. Macaffee only causes problems when updating and it catches everything. You can set it to "over protective mode" and it will scan every object your ship in FL comes in contact with and shoots.

It kills viruses and Trojans aren't really a match for it. Some are but then there is the system restore button and that kills all evil programs.

I never use antivirus software, and whenever I spot a Virus on my laptop........I run.

My Happy Virgin Computer - Gazoo - 06-25-2007

Firewall - Zone Alarm Free
Anti-Virus - AVG 7.5 Free
Spyware - Adaware Free and Spybot Free
Browser - Firefox

These are all free and rank among the top ten in each class. I have used them for years with no problems.
So why pay for something you can get for free
I also use a router with firewall but a software firewall is good to have also.

What's wrong with 'Norton' and 'Mcaffee'? As long as you know what your doing, and how do clean & use your computer who needs anything else? I'd rather Use them then some random **** off the 'net.

If you give me your IP your computer will no longer be a virgin...

Muahahahah!!! MUAHAHAHA! *cough*

Hahaha BFH... Well, I use Panda Internet Security 2007 Suite. NOD 32 failed when I tried to use it to erase some viruses I had some time ago. Panda works like a charm. Anyway, you need a potent system, the full suite uses a lot of ram and cpu usage...
