@ initial post: In front of me indicates a gate directly ahead, usually > 1.5K away. Cruise is fastest, as you can use your transport's inertia to force a quickdock (it'll shove you through the gate arch and the lane animation takes)
For short distances, and lanes you need to turn into (like the bends in Galileo) thruster is often better.
