Xfire member since 2006-08-23

Was using it looong before skype. Steam copied whole in game chat system from xfire , so yeah. No need to tell that 'xfire suxx balz, skype rulz' cause using them has different purpose. Skype is conference place, xfire is great in game tool with multiple options, though after last few updates Voice chat really was messed up.

So yeah, xfire+skype :>

Bi[A]s in some of the (]o[)pinions posted here made me lol.

But that aside, in my opinion Xfire and Skype each fulfill one aspect of this game. You can't say 'Why not xfire -instead- of Skype?', because obviously, Skype is more popular in this community because of some aspects (Group chat management mostly), while Xfire fulfills other aspects better than skype. So, I'd rather see people using xfire along with Skype, rather than instead of it.

Xfire has In-game chat, which makes it much easier to contact anyone without having to tab out, while on the other hand, its group text chat is so messed up I never use it. Xfire also lets you take screenshots and videos and upload right away, and also has in-game Web browser and music player (So if you have winamp or any other common player running, you wont have to tab out to select another song from the playlist, you can do it ingame).

But let's face it, Skype isn't that great either. A main issue with Skype is the lag, for people with Not-so-good nets like mine going on a Skype call while in-game is pretty much the most stupid thing to do (unless you enjoy flying around through red lag of course), and even the skype itself running while in-game causes lag, and that's why I usually close skype when I get on server (Which makes Emergency channels rather useless, unless I have a factionmate flying with me ingame or online on xfire).

Seeing that I'm not one of those people who go like 'installing more than 1 communication software is a waste of time and blabla', I prefer having Skype (For 'off-time' group chats), Xfire (For in-game chat and stuff) and TeamSpeak (For lagless voice chat while ingame) for playing Disco. But sadly, some people don't see the point and limit themselves (And others) to a Not-so-great program called Skype.

I stopped using XFire when I found that it causes crashes when running Freelancer. It may be more of a driver problem than a bug in the app.

This happened to me as well. I used both Xfire and Skype before, but for some reason Xfire kept getting disabled/enabled ingame all the time, which caused pretty big lag spikes. Dont know if this was just with me or what, but that was one of the reasons I stopped using it with FL.

It happens to me aswell.
I launch Freelancer, choose character, launch to space and then "Xfire connection established" message starts spamming while game is loading and CRASH.

Well I had problems with fps. When I was playing Freelancer, and tried opening ingame chat, my FPS droped like I am recording stuff with FRAPS, from 60-70 FPS it droped to 30.
Never figured out why was this happening, and my PC isn't that lame that it couldn't handle running them together.

I use Xfire to browse the forums while ingame, thats a pro,
the Con is that it won't save chats,

thats is where my skype comes in.

To be honest few years back I hated xfire and loved skype, today its complete opposite.

I use skype only because everyone else here uses it, thats the only reason why.

Xfire has gone a long way since I first registered.
Now you can make a group, team or whatever. You can set admins to it, you get group forums, gaming time, roster, ranks, event calendar, etc. Most of all it has ingame chat. You can take screenshots, videos (videos work better on xfire than fraps, tested). idk who said skype doesnt have voice, hes so wrong, it has voice and group voice chat so I call ignorance on that one. As soon as I enter the game I quit skype because it just anyones me.

For ingame I use xfire, for world I use Trillian and for disco I use skype.

It is:)Just look in options, there is a box for saving chats as txt file (something like logs of FL).

The only issue is that you cant write to person who is offline. But there is chat archive.

Protip: Go into Skype's settings and uncheck the box that lets it use port 443.

It causes issues with a lot of other programs. notably Cain&Abel...
