Also, I would like to see the entirity of some whole houses combined into a single enourmous system. Do away with system chat entirely, but make local chat far longer range.

This, if it's possible. Jump gates become in-system jumpgate shortcuts, or take the in system jumphole, or cruise 100k.

Exactly this. At least one third of all systems could be deleted/merged into bigger systems. Thus the few existing systems would have activity, but still a feeling of vastness to them.

make the systems big, but make the planets correspondingly massive too
this

and this combined is my opinion on it

What Joe and Ing said.

Systems like Tau-23? No.

But the amount of systems in 4.86 is ridiculous. We need fewer systems with more people in them, not the other way around.

From one perspective -

Space is vast and limitless. Under regular propulsion methods, it takes years to traverse between systems, months between planets.

So having all those systems, with one person in each of them, can reflect the lonliness that you would experience in real spaceflight.

From the other perspective -

Go try to search for someone in Newcastle. I took part in a hunt there one time with 5 of us (BHG and BAF) chasing one pirate. We spent an hour and a half chasing him around, and no one ever found him. He didn't dock, he just flew around and the system is just so big, it's not fun to play in. (I know he didn't dock - the player and I were talking in skype.)

Tau 23: too small

Newcastle: too big.

Well since you can go in all directions 400k off the map, looking for someone who does not wish to be found is totally hopeless in even the tiniest system.

This can be done, but it's messy as hell. You create lots and lots of little asteroid fields, and arrange them in a ring. It works, but you have to fly through each section of the asteroid belt, or it won't show up on your nav map.

You could just also do what the developers did in Omega-11 with the Von Rohe Belt (forgive me if that's spelled incorrectly). In the NavMap, it shows up as a regular, round asteroid field, but in space, it's just a belt.

My point was that we were actively seeking him, he was RP'ing with us in system chat the whole time - he never went more than 20K off the plane, even.
