I play Soldat when I am bored of Freelancer. Very fast, very exciting, very funny, though, you need insane reflexes.:D
It doesn't cost anything for pure fun, explosions and flying bullets.

If your into RPGs and can handle bad graphics, try out Avernum seris or Geneforge. [avernum.com]
If you like more action theres this medieval simulator called Mount and Blade, no fantasy which turns off some people, but it really adds to the games realism. The vanilla game is ok, but the true greatness is the tons of mods out there for it, a good one if you get it is Sword of Damocles.
If you like RTS's I would try your hand at Galactic Civilizations, last i remeber it came in on impulse or steam [forgot which one] in an all-in-one pack called Endless universe for about 20 bucks and oh is it worth it. It has no multiplayer, but you will find that the AI more than makes up for it [seriously the AI is very tough]
As a last word....MINECRAFT. That is all.
