Not unique to Microsoft, either--fairly common way of doing things nowadays. Do things get missed? Probably. Is it because Microsoft employees are lazy and terrible? No--it's because there are as many different combinations of computer hardware and software as there are computer owners, and obviously not every scenario can be tested exhaustively.
Crash reports are actually extremely useful--not just the report itself, but also the scope of the problem. If you have a million installed computers and a dozen instances of a crash, that'll get prioritized below a crash that has several thousand hits a day.
And trust me--what ends up going out the door is a whole lot better and more stable than the stuff that nobody outside ever gets to see.

Well I do know that they are extending support to ARM processors in addition to the normal Intel and AMD, although the support is limited to the Metro apps and word, powerpoint, excel and one note.

1. Release ****ty build of Windows that everyone hates.
2. Hackers and programmers fix Windows so that it works the RIGHT way and release a version of their own.
3. Microsoft finds said programmers and threatens them with a lawsuit unless they join Microsoft and code the next version of Windows with fixed bugs.
4. Good version of Windows comes out.

Or it's just a case of me being older.
My first IBM based PC was a 20 Mhz, 8 Mb RAM, 150 MB HDD, and ran both DOS and Windows 3.1. It was an improvement when they came out with Windows 3.11. Ah, the joys of writing my own Batch programs based upon original DOS.
Of course, my first personally owned computer had 4K of RAM - and there was no such thing as a HDD, it used a tape drive.
