RE: Server Moderators/Police - Marburg - 08-25-2013

It's funny...well, not 'HA!' funny, just 'GAH!' funny.

This thread comes up multiple times a year, every year. For some, it's because they're lazy & don't wanna do their own legwork by using the search button & learning why server cops won't happen. Some simply want the attention a redundant topic grants them, & still others that simply choose to never listen unless something is said they specifically want to hear.

The facepalmy 'Gah!' part comes in with the numbers.

I've seen oodles of complaint posts about low server population. Back when the server pop was regularly much larger, it got by just fine without server police, & yet here this thread is again, calling for more jackboots to police less people.

Think about that for a minute.

Gee wilikers, my opinion is irrelevant then. Ho hah. Let's just let the hackers get away everything guys, since there's clearly nothing that can be done about it.

Actually Marburg

with the increse of Haxors it is not a bad idea,
That way if they get the acces to .kick command it will be less fun for the fool and his friends that keeps hacking.

But Marburg, it's different because "X" made the thread and it should be seriously considered!!!!!

All it will be doing is making more admins. Our admin team is already recruiting people, so that should help.

Mods are over rated. If you can't trust that person with admin, then they do not need moderator. Just my view on the dealio.

This but for Disco can solve it. 10 people with unique MACs vote ban and the hacker is gone in less then 2 min.
If one codes it the problem is gone. Hackers cannot be fought with ancient methods by putting people in the game to watch for them.

this could be seriously abused though.
For example, there's one rogue. A completely legit player. But the LNS don't like him because they can't shoot him down, so what do they do? They use their numbers to votekick him.
I bet none would abuse it if he gets all of his ships deleted as result.
Simple problems have simple solutions and you all post too much non-sense instead of something constructive that solves the problems.
Hackers, trolls, spambots are not something new and there are many proven methods to keep them in check. No point of useless posting in the forum- it does not fix the problem. 1 Day MAC tempbans do the job- they change the MAC, lolwut around a bit and get banned in less then 10min again after 3-4th time they get bored and stop doing it.
Single people can easy misjudge but if there is transparent decision to take with many others involved the group acts as corrective of the persons so it fix the problem.

RE: Server Moderators/Police - sindroms - 08-25-2013

Implementing a community based sanction system would be easier, if still as pointless. Basically, a legal trial by forum. But again, easier than what is proposed, but just as pointless.

RE: Server Moderators/Police - Govedo13 - 08-25-2013

If you call having server without your hacker fellows ability to disturb gameplay around pointless seems that your opinion is irrelevant.

I'll be blunt, our Admin team is hardly doing anything. They don't understand the commitment. They're also closing people off simply because they're are -afraid- of passing power onto people who may not have X posts or X skype friends and so forth.
Really, it's like having forum moderators except in game.

Betting no one would abuse it is a stupid and ridiculous assumption.
I, and many others, have played games with this. It DOES get abused. And based upon the mentality of some of the playerbase I seriously doubt this would go un-abused.

Hey, it's not like people abuse in game mechanics already, right? right!?

RE: Server Moderators/Police - Marburg - 08-25-2013

@ Roadrunner: The problem isn't hackers. They're a symptom. I've observed the culture change here as it happened. While Disco has never been perfect, I've watched the downward spiral from then to now.

This problem is multi-layered & server cops won't fix it

Self policing trumps server policing & yet self policing is no longer the norm here. The hackers hack because people give them fame & a reason to keep coming back.

There are some very simple techniques to improve this place & while they won't solve every problem this place has, they will help with a turnaround.

I'll be happy to tell y'all what needs to be done, but the Reactionaries need to 1st get over how they see the problem & begin to be willing to get proactive.
