Well. The anime is an offshoot of the gameboy game.
Saying Pokémon is an anime is somewhat misleading, it's more like "Pokémon is a series of Nintendo games, upon which an anime was based".

Edit: When you think about it, it's pretty damn impressive that they managed to devise a long-running and highly successful television series that's based on a gameboy game.
