you cant go by the game's release date compared exactly to the year in freelancer.

The nomad war started in 799 A.S., and ended in 801 A.S.. The events of the singleplayer campaign take effect towards the end of that war, when the order finally wins - but the war had been going on for a couple years already without anyone but a few small groups knowing about it.

The Nomad "war" had infact been going on for many decades before the events set in the single player campaign, but that was all building up to the climax, as it were. Like water being dammed, everything slowly built up over the years until everything seemed to happen at once, but in reality it had been going on for many years. There will be quite a bit more background information regarding the pre-Nomad War Order relations with various groups across Sirius released with 4.85 also.

Wait, I thought the Nomads were awakened only after Rheinland found them in a distant expedition. It was also mentioned that this was a few months before the Order finally won.

At Kyoto, coming back from Tohoku, Hakkera says it was a month ago. On the Battleship Osiris for the first time, Orillion says a few months (I'll say 3). Then when you land on Toledo for the first time, Von Claussen says the Order built the base on Toledo in only a few months (maybe 3 months after Orillion realized the Nomads infected his CO and 4 months after the Nomads were awakened).

If that's the case...how could the Nomads have been fighting with humanity for decades if they were still sleeping?

In the concept documentation, the Order was founded a long, long time ago by the Liberty government and the top three Liberty corporations. Obviously this was changed somewhat for the actual vanilla game, but then again we're going with the extended version of the intro that was never used, and the documentation that says there were eight sleeper ships launched (Gallia etc). So this is just another of those changes. It doesn't really matter and doesn't really impact anything majorly and to be fair, an organisation as efficient, organised and powerful as the Order wouldn't have been formed in a mere 3 months or so before the culmination of the war. Just another of Microsoft's bits of bollocks in my view.
