I can't really forgive Skype for breaking things like quoting and escaping so badly.

The year is 2025, guess what has these problems now? Discord.

Also guess what doesn't have these problems? Mumble.

Proprietary software is bound to enshitify as time goes on, because exclusive control is too tempting.

Revolt is the one that some of us in K'Hara are keeping an eye on for when Discord becomes too dogshit.

Once again, I find myself in the minority who doesn't ever have any problems with discord.

Likewise, and what issues I do have I've modded out of existance.

Heard of it a while ago, voice chat (and pretty much everything in-between) is still half-baked and likely will follow the same fate Matrix followed. Plus they only document how to deploy this through Docker, which is not great in terms of freedom. Ever since I first heard about this the whole project had a strong stench of corporate culture, which means it's bound to be proprietary by spirit rather than letter. I've also had a few convos with the people involved and they don't seem to care much about secure and private communication, go figure.

There's been something called Jabber for a long while for plain text communication, unlike Revolt this one does offer end-to-end encryption, there's multiple server and client implementations and there's plenty of documentation on how to host these even on a Raspberry Pi, think of it as email, but with XMPP rather than POP3/SMTP/IMAP.

Until Discord decides they've had enough allowing modding and they start banning accounts. Pretty sure they've banned plenty of people before over it, they also ban accounts but do not delete any of the data you've sent even if you demand they do, which is definitely illegal in multiple countries, but no one cares to enforce that, too much money involved.

Anyhow, imagine sticking with a broken, dangerous wheel that needs patching things out rather than the other way around, such is the state of affairs.

Hey it's a thread I made back in 2018!

Why

I just found it mildly funny that you complained about Skype issues seven years ago and that Discord today has pretty much the same problems, if not more.

RE: Community Push Onto Discord - Corile - 09-06-2025

I think people misremember how utterly, horribly dogshit Skype was at the time. Discord is nowhere near as bad.
