Primarily trading. So long as you don't do boring routes, it can be a lot of fun (depending on who is around).
But there's also stopping by wrecks while trading (you'd be amazed how many aren't camped, despite all that's said about that) and supplying arms dealers.

The only unlawfull ship that is able to maintain itself in my fleet is the Varyag. That is just because I love doing anti cap missions in it. The rest of the fleet is maintained by my smuggler or my lawful trader. I don't ask nearly enough as my pirate to sustain myself. Funny how many traders I kill for 500k to 1mil.

Trading, cause trading is fun.
The trick is to repeat the location you are heading to over and over until you get there. Then it seems that you all-of-the-sudden made a giant sum of cash.
