What is a Bounty Hunter - Leo - 02-26-2009

I didn't choose anything, because none of those are what a BH is.

Bounty Hunters are exactly what the name portrays. They hunt bounties. Either bounties on lawful folks or unlawful, there is no line for them, it's greyed out.

P.S. I play as a Bounty Hunter, and if I see a bounty up on someone who's got a lawful background, I don't care.
Money is money.

The ID says you cannot perform unlawful actions. It also says you are allied with the Police factions. Now I know there is a rule about freelancers not being allowed to take unlawful bounties, but surely the BHG id precludes unlawful killing.

Bounties are, gernerally speaking, issued by lawful organisations. Killing for unlawfuls makes you a contract killer, an assassin, a hired goon, a hired thug, a mercenary, an unscruplous hired gun, etc. Even the two examples of BH that come to mind immediately -
Bobafett from Star Wars and Duane Chapman "Dog" work on the side of the law, even though the law might be a nasty Sith with asthma.

As I see it, as far as Bounty Hunters in Freelancer go, Athenian has everything correct. We're here to make money by hunting those bountied by lawful entities, to assist lawful forces when requested to do so (for a nominal fee, of course), and to wage war upon the Order, and their allies, in the Omicrons as we pursue nomad tech.

If you want to pursue unlawful bounties you automatically become a Mercenary. I fail to see why it is so hard to accept that.

98% of the time, noobs, 2% of the time, people with excentric RP, and a couple do have real RP, they are called, Bounty Hunters. The real one.

They are barely 0.1% of discovery population, too.

Oh I voted 3.

Bounty Hunters, BHG, whatever, it's all semantics, seriously... what's the big deal? If you have a BHG ID, you can't attack unlawfuls. Freelancers can if there's a bounty, but they can't engage in unlawful military actions (at least that's what I think). It's all confusing, so on my FL I just do whatever, since Freelancer's are... well... just that. They freelance. To anyone.

BHG have their reputation as a member of the Guild, therefore they can't.

Bounty Hunters exist to grief anything that's below Neutral in their Battleships.

Let's be clear about this. Threads discussing the BHG ID pop up on a regular basis. And every time, many players choose to air grievances and make inflammatory remarks about the ID because they have some problem with another player. It's in no way constructive, and frankly speaking, it's irritating, boring and not related to the topic of the thread. We were discussing the ID, but then random trash like the above pops up. A few words, with no elaboration, that serves no purpose whatsoever.

Stay on the topic or stay out of the thread.

Having had my Scimitar light fighter destroyed by a BHG Battleship, I'm still going to condense what Athenian said into what I believe its core message was:

Shut up.

I fly a Manta - a fighter, in case you didn't know. I don't have a Bounty Hunter capital ship (though I've considered an Orca since most targets I see are in gunships). I don't even have a bomber for my Hunter. Just a Manta. There are good Bounty Hunters out there, but what happens when we go after bounties - which is our goddamn job! - in a fighter?

People whine about us camping in Liberty! Tell you what, if you have a problem with my Hunter spending his time in Liberty, make a Molly and give me something to do in Bretonia. I'd go there if I could. I like Bretonia far more than I like Liberty. Maybe it's an issue of time zones, but when I'm around there's next to no activity from the player faction pirates in Bretonia or Rheinland, and the majority of times when I go out chasing an independent that looks vaguely suspicious, he ends up being a freaking trader.

Properly playing a Bounty Hunter sucks. Not because of the difficulty in tracking down bounties - which I'm fine with - but because of all the whining. Apparently, we can't do anything right.

But put yourself through it before you harp on those of us who are trying. I might even buy you a Hammerhead or a Manta just so you can see it how I do. And maybe after a frustrating day of dealing with Raven's Talons running away, the only other Xenos being in Starblazers, seeing an assortment of pirate gunships you can't shoot down because you're flying a fighter, and eventually being destroyed by a Sabre after hearing "Incoming missile. Incoming missile. Incoming missile. Incoming missile. Incoming missile. Incoming missile. Incoming missile.", you'll understand why I'm so irritable about this.

Bounty Hunter in the Freelancer universe refers to a member of the bounty hunters guild. If you have an unlawful who hunts bounties, he is simply a mercenary, NOT a "bounty hunter".

Grimly, the Bounty Hunters Guild is a lawful organisation. They don't take out bounties against lawfuls (lawful in the eyes of the Houses)

The question is ... what is a bounty hunter ... not what is a bounty hunter guildman.

Even my bellerophon have Merc ID, I use it as a real BOUNTY HUNTER !
