My character's parents died in a cave-in from a mining accident, & raised by his Godfather... who was eventually & accidentally killed by my character when he ripped the mans throat out with his teeth in front of a cheering audience of hundreds.

Malexa Maltes father died in the nomad incident. Her Mum is still alive and moved from Manhattan to Nuremberg again.
Diana Blanes parents are both alive and working on a Zoner-Transport.

One big reason: dead family = easy motivation. Actually, none of my characters have dead parents. Then again, none of my characters are the "super-cool action-hero" type, seeking REVENGE(!!!) for what has been done to him/his family/Billy-joe-bob down the street. They're all more run-of-the-mill average background types.
Well, except Hughes. Neville Hughes, my BAF, is a down-and-dirty coarse bastard off the harsh streets of New London into the spaceways for Bowex, then out into the wonderful world of military life. He just has a very bad relationship with his parents. Not that I've ever written this down. I just think up my characters' backstories, never bother putting pen to paper. Or, as the case might be, finger to key.

My Bretonian capship's commander has the best of both worlds: his parents were killed in a Corsair/Kusari/Hogosha attack, and he suffers complete amnesia from the moment at which he left Planetform to join the Gaians to the moment at which he was found floating in Omega-47 in a wrecked Order ship.

The best sci-fi parent has to be Korben Dallas' mother from Fifth Element. Give a character that and watch at it chip at their sanity! Living parents can be worse than dead ones.

btw my KNF Arimatsu_Yoritoro have cool family history behind including now already dead father which is in KNF (I mean real, not imaginary) signed as traitor. BS (Taiko) captain Ashigaka Yoritoro refused orders from high comand (all ingame) and led with his ship his small war against whole world. One can say oh dady ruined cariere of his sons but nope, young Yoritoro is high officer now (Chusa) and working on rehabilitation of his father.
btw: there was highest bounty on single person in history of disco (if I know) on Ashigaka's head:cool::cool::cool:

Anyone with a "my parents were killed by liberty and I want revenge story" has instantly failed to get into the XA.
My Xeno's parents are...
Mother: Alive, but homeless and aging.
Father: Died of completely natural causes.
We in the XA don't recruit people with backgrounds that seem to have been copy/pasted from another story that we saw earlier in our recruitment thread.
