Maybe it was never depressurised?

Then why abandon it?

Standard "we lost contact with this station/planet/outer rim region and are too lazy to figure out what happened ourselves. Here's some cash to go find out what happened to them." And then the guy goes and runs off with the cash/dies a horrible death due to whatever killed whomever ran the station originally.

Anyone who docks on the station from then on dies O.o

I think all points on both sides are valid, both why a station would exist, and the fact that it would degrade. RP wise, I think it would really add a lot to portray the stations as somewhere in between. A slowly decomposing hunk of drifting metal occupied primarily by homeless scrags and missionaries. They should have minimal equipment, containing only the lowest grades of consumable ammunition, and very low rank weapons and ships, if they actually have any. consumer goods, oxigen, hydrogen, food rations, and drugs should be high price commodities, and things that would never be affordable by the poorest of the poor should go for the lowest price possible to reflect a lack of demand for those products. (But still be within relation to the region. I. E. No high prices for cardimine in a base in malta. That will probably be the biggest problem, regulating trade.)

The stations themselves should appear primarily incomplete. If we could take the Hispania Model (I think that's the name of the wreck in Malta) and make it a dockable structure, that would be perfect. Other potential candidates would be asteroid stations, and the very bare bones stations like the outposts found at the edge of most core faction regions. Further, placement should be in the most remote locations, and stations themselves should not appear on the nav map. (I remember jumpholes that never recorded on nav maps, surely we can do it with stations also.) If any one faction has residence too close to any station, they will inevitably attempt to dominate it. Of course, each station could still have its own story, which you could read after docking. One could be a drug den, (Can we get the backdrop from the asteroid base with the archway in SP?) another could be a refugee camp that is no longer supplied by the government. Trader outposts that were simply abandoned because the tradewinds shifted. (This happens on earth. Do a search for ghost towns in your area, there are probably more than a few.) You get the picture.

The other thing I really like about this idea is that it solves other problems. For instance, all those arguments about Lisburn in Cambridge? Just make it abandoned! Then everyone can use it and thus wins, or dies in a fight over it.

I still think its a very good idea. But we can't have 100 abandoned bases in every system.

I got an idea for one, there's a station wreck in Kansas called 'junction wreck'

Good location iin an un-owned system, if we only make 1 abandoned base, make it that.

as for reasons why they are abandoned:

-Too much pirates, owners fled before things got nasty

-local mineral/mining depleated, station useless

-owners built base only to find the reason they tried to build was a dud, so it was only half built

-funding/recources ran out for upkeep.building so it was left abandoned/unfinished

-posssibly a radiation cloud drifed onto the base, so they abandoned it

-outpost broke out of orbit and drifted away, never to be seen again

-a newly-formed JH made the base unstable, the JH's gravity could rip it apart so the owners fled

-a virus wiped out the inhabitants, no salvage attemtps coz' they don;t want to bring back the virus

-nomads wiped out the inhabitants (only suitable for a nomad rest-point)

-base was used to monitor a pirate thread in loacl cloud, the JH inside dissapeared so the station was useless because the pirates were gone

-a lost miner/gas miner got lost or was boarded, inhabitants killed , the pirates fled due to incoming hostiles, hostiles chased fleeing pirates while the miner flew away

Further rasons such bases shoudl exist.

I well and truely Agree with dataphreak, in terms of what the station sells (or make high-grade ammor really expensive therem i don't think they'll sell any ships)

(BTW, could there be dockable stationary barges? like a dockable BS only for miners? )

Heres a thought: make them destroyable. I know its been brought up before, but why is it always shot down? BECAUSE WHEN A NPC SPAWN POINT IS DESTROYED, THE SERVER CRASHES. But theres no npcs spawning there, therefore, no server crash. If possible it could force the people docked there to undock, so the "lol you cant get me" is gone. They'd respawn every server restart, just like wrecks.

"Abandoned" Bases - Rashnok - 05-09-2009

But if you destroy a player spawn point... guess what happens.

Server crash.

Unless you get fancy with the FLHook, which is perfectly possible, but I question how worthwhile it is.
