Sure, however the argument is that you can also install your own "old fashioned" pack if you are in the minority, which looks to be the case. I don't think it works as an argument for either side when it is easily customizable. It isn't like balance, where ex. Sunslayers do 5k damage for all players and everyone has to accept it as the objective truth with no modifying possibility.

It's probably more annoying to restorr the default if you don't back it up.

The mods are available. Vanilla is a bit of a hoop to jump through as you need to redownload the game

Shrimply make the vanilla files available for easy download on the forums.

Couldn't it just be added as part of the installer setup? Like with Bloom?

If it were up to me, I'd honestly hand go over any 'visual upgrades' to ensure consistency rather than shoving it in. Because majority of these are actually a downgrade and do not properly represent the regions. But would love an option for seamless modding rather than hand picking files.

Or just do this.

I vehemently protest the idea of shoving in a pack because bigger textures == quality as a concept is ridiculous.

They are inconsistent. They will pose a problem with the nebulae texture. A lot of the voroni appreciation content in it doesn't exactly represent some of the regions properly. Too definitive background elements can create visual noise and become a bit too distracting. Also some of the colours being adjusted honestly does mess with the vibe.

If we are to do visual overhauls, I'd rather have us do it by hand with vanilla comparison to ensure we properly get the aesthetic and dont do any wild deviations, especially in the colour grading.

I do agree that forcing non-vanilla stuff is bad. I remember when many sound effects were forcefully changed to horrible ones with inconsistent volume and quality ripped from Halo or something (say goodbye to your ears if a mortar was fired next to you).

RE: Community Input: Freelancer HD Starspheres - Kauket - 12-16-2024

It's not that non vanilla is bad. It's just the lack of forethought into applying said art. A lack of art direction

I know you said that these can also be changed locally, but is there any server side impact to how elaborate these are?

If no server side impact, please go ahead and do them all, there is an obvious difference for the better.

Thank you everyone for the feedback. We won't be applying this everywhere globally, but only in certain areas where it's really an improvement. We're talking 3-4 starspheres at most.
