The way I see it:

Xfire/steam > Ventrillo > TS > Skype.

Skype is a memory hogger imho, and not fit to be ran with games aside.

I think people only start to use skype because alot of people allready do.

As To one who was saying that skype is nearly the best for 'chats' textbased, your completely wrong.

IRC beats skype on that matter too :O

Well tbh skype's offline messaging sucks and its really pointless since both persons have to be online in order to receive a offline message.

Xfire got taken over by another computer. And turned all the advertisements into friend-finder and crap.

I use Xfire for the in game MSN, hours and video. Steam and Skype for the rest (Since Steam got screenshot support). When it comes to in game voice and text all in one, I just find Steam the better option.

@Mr.Smith
Nope. You both do not have to be online. One advantage Skype has.
I send messages all the time to people who are offline. They get it when they come online. Individual and Group chats.

That's my reason.

Nail meets head.

I'd personally prefer a combo of TeamSpeak, IRC, and Dropbox.
