Well. guess I'll post my speed test in a thread that wasn't really too much about speed (despite the OP's reference) but how you prefer your games..

That being said, these tests are run on servers which are meant to give you unlimited bandwidth, I've never personally seen a Steam download break 1.2mbps. I like going into game stores to look at what they have, mostly used games for consoles (got Halo 3 ODST for like $10, etc.). I also got Fallout New Vegas at a BestBuy for the same price they're selling on Steam, plus with that one you download it on your computer you can reinstall it, without the disc, through Steam.

Actually these days I rather chose to download games and movies that I actually own than to browse trough my discs.
