Almost every new model for something I've seen so far follows the same design principles time and time again.
Flat. Small profile from the side, larger from the top. Cockpit on the top, half-way back, fighter style. Wings. Relatively pointed nose.

How about taking the current gunship model and upgrading it to freelancer-style borderworlds? General shape would stay.
That way it's more of an upgrade rather than a replacement. If you need a precedent, look at the Combat Service Freighter and its predecessor, turanic raiders freighter.
Current gunship model is original, and has its own textures.
