It's up to you how to RP it basicly.
If you want your character to die, let him/her die.
If you want your character to use the escape pod , do so.

Escape pods are equipped with fusion engines that fire you out at high velocity like a rocket. Somehow, they are also equipped with homing devices that home in on the nearest friendly base.

On our ship, we have teleporting clothes. It deconstructs the body in its cells and warp it to the last safepoint. In games you need to use your imagination sometimes.:P

1) escape pods are invulnerable forever.
2) rp deaths don't count if you were killed in a oorp gank and every fight in disco is an oorp gank.
3) pull a doc Jameson and say you have a billion clones
4) pull a doc Jameson and say the ship was piloted by robots.
5) pull a Seth Karlo and be an immortal vampire.
6) say it never happened and it was all a dream.
7) say your explosion was a social experiment.
8) shout hahahahahaha you fools you think you got me!?
9) pull a scra and say it was a hologram.
10) pull a scra and shout data retrieved.
11) reincarnate as a infant in control of a geb.
12) die and have your spirit merge with the forum where you live to fight another day.
13) meoshi.
14) post that discovery used to be better and that they killed your rp character because they don't know rp or something.
15) or just go with escape pods.
16) or say eff it, man up, grab a baseball bat and a fire extinguisher, leap from the burning ruin of your ship and demand round 2. Do it like a man.
