@Wuselkobold:
Medieval mercs had the ability to have as good as equipment as their enemies and fight them man to man. There is a large difference when professional armies have access to much more powerful technology than mercs do in futuristic/modern armies (i.e. cruisers and battleships). In my mind, this means the modern mercenary is playing more of an augmentation, then front-line role.

...

The thing is, in Freelancer, everybody is equipped with similar levels of technology, civilians have access to codenames, Sabres and Supernovas, which are on par with their military counterparts. They might not be able to field capital ships but, from a roleplay point of view, what would be cheaper? Loosing a Battleship worth several hundred million credits, its crew and all that to a highly trained and well organised, yet small and hard to track down at the same time gang of mercenaries or throwing a couple of millions their way so they wander off and kill your neighbours or even enemies men and being able to still field said warship against your foes yourself?
I'm not comparing the reavers to a full military force able of bringing an entire house to its knees, but they for sure are able to cause a lot of damage, which might be easier to prevent in paying them off, instead of taking up arms.

Hehe, just had to laugh, my little "discussion" pushed your count over 500. Well done!

I'll leave with the activity listings for some of our primary targets.

Something tells me that these guys aren't only fighting Reavers for days at a time. As corporations go, those particular factions on this list actually have some pretty good time online.

As far as I go playing my CR, I always order my folks back rather then fight you. I dont feed trolls. Or subsequent whatnot. There is much more to do, then pvp you lot. Thus the activity. No matter how "hard" you keep trying to hit us, it aint changing a thing. Bar us moving just to another system to stay online.

' Wrote:My worry comes over how that "power" can defeat other factions RP and also be used as a means to blackmail other factions into either paying you more or giving you access to their ships and weapons. Now you can obviously tell me that that would never happen, but it will. I simply don't see how anyone could justify a OORP strength to be able to push an agenda INRP. It's not fair, simple as that.

You'll note that we can't actually blackmail anyone. To do so would mean we'd have to be able to follow through on the threat. Example:

Reavers: RHA, give us your guns or we'll kill you.
RHA: No. Sit on it and rotate.

Guess what? We can't make good on that threat unless another official faction pays us to hunt the RHA. So your claim of us blackmailing is false, we can't blackmail people. We aren't able to due to the rules.

If we were official? Yes, we most definealty could, but to do so we'd also have to open up the blanket bounty we post to another party to meet the rules requirements.

While you have a valid point about how we currently operate, the blame lies with those who hire us. Not us. they enable it. We take advantage of them. If they didn't enable us to flip flop, we'd be forced to pick a side and stick with it. I don't have an issue with doing that, but until we are made to do so in role play; it makes no sense in role play not to take advantage of our employers.

As for us having more power inRP than we should have due to this being a game? Not our issue. I'm not going to not play my Reaver because we have high activity. I'm not going to purposfully lose a fight either (unless I need to leave asap or just feel like leaving quickly!).

As for you Reptile, you're free to do what you do. We don't honestly care. We'll continue to hunt CR so long as we're paid to do so. If you flee when you see us, you're only making us look good in role play. :P Perhaps if you'd actually interact with us, you'd find we aren't trolls. We're just good at filling our choosen roles. If you can't deal with that and think that because we're good at filling our roles that makes us trolls, perhaps you're playing the wrong type of game.

I'd just like to point out that most of the active players left in the Reavers aren't even all that great at PvP, and since this is clearly just another "REAVERS KILLED ME MUST NERF" thread I think you can all go back to sipping tea and nomming crumpets in the middle of our chaotic and violent battlefield that is Sirius as you were doing prior to having it so heinously interrupted by people who realize that this is not happy rainbows and unicorns land where everybody holds hands and frolics through vast field of daisies.

First of all, no one faction should have an INRP increase in power due to an OORP strength. It only serves to demoralise other factions. I cannot believe you don't see that? Secondly, no one asked you to purposefully lose a fight, so I don't know where that came from. A bit of realism to your diplomacy would help but that's too much to ask. In the end it boils down to this. You guys will keep on doing whatever it is you do. People on the short end of the stick will continue to get frustrated until such a time as they just avoid you completely.

Thirdly, in all my posting, I haven't demanded a thing, merely asked that you think about the realism of your diplomacy, which is basically hogwash. You actually admit this but then state that it doesn't matter as the factions allow you to do it??? Yeah, also trying to figure that one out, don't worry your not alone there.

Also, the blackmail doesn't come from, "Give us your stuff or we kill you on the spot!" No, it comes from the ability to chop and change diplomacy at will and the ability to force people into hiring you for fear of you being hired by their enemy. Your unfair strength comes from the ability to pick sides willy nilly with no consequences. That's unrealistic, I merely keep pointing that out.

I don't really care if you guys are in it for the blue messages, what I care about is if your going to be official, shouldn't your diplomacy and actions at least be somewhat realistic?

Here, let me give you an example. If you have two teams, playing whatever sport. One side gets all the pros and the other side gets, well, the losers. Why would you expect the losers to keep on playing against the pros? That don't learn anything, it's not fun and they only get demotivated further. You guys have an unfair advantage over other players, you admit this but then say it isn't a problem. And then you wonder why you get negative feedback? And when someone points it out, they just angry for being killed and that's it. They must learn to deal with how you get your jollies.

However, don't worry about negative feedback, you guys will get your officialdom, you will get your ID, your own ship line eventually and you won't have to worry about others as you will still get to have your fun. It's quite simple, feedback means nothing to Reavers as they don't need to worry about it affecting them in any way.

Yeah, just asked myself the right question. Why am I still bothering answering the obvious taunts? I'm done.

I wasn't here when we turned on the Corsairs.

I stopped playing during that time period, apparently shortly before this went down, and when I came back I was told we had a trial contract with the Hessians.

Also of note is that, whatever discussion was going on in Skype today, I wasn't a part of simply because I have barely been at the computer today. So what I say is just my take on it. And quite frankly, I agree with you Scavenger. I don't think it's right that we can move from one side of the fence like that. When I was first a Reaver, our main target was Hessians and Outcasts for the Corsairs, and when I got back... it was the exact opposite, Corsairs for the Hessians and Outcasts.

Now, it can be easily justified by saying that the Corsairs stopped paying for some length of time (with no OORP assurances that the board would come back, either, from what I heard). The Hessians were there, willing to pay the group that had once hunted them for both the Corsairs and RM, where applicable.

But then, you can look at Liberty. Their board was taken down quite some time ago as well, actually right before I got back as I recall, and it's still down now. Our activity levels in Liberty are zero, or near enough. When it comes down to it, the exact same thing happened in each instance. Board goes down, we go elsewhere to find work. It's just that in Liberty, no one was hiring.

And I might add, the Corsair board was my favorite board. Are you kidding? No ZOI limits, nice payouts, several targets in several areas. Fancy a stroll in Bretonia? BAF and BPA covered. Kusari? Dragons and GC. Anywhere? Outcasts and BHG. It was a beautiful thing.

So, if I had the option to continue working for the Corsairs? Hell yeah, I'd jump at that in an instant to get back to how it was. I would much prefer a stable diplomacy with a few good contracts than switching sides like that. Ultimately though, we're mercenaries. We're dealt the cards we're dealt. At the end of the day, someone has to be paying the bills.

So in the end, I'm not trying to blame the people who hire us. Because there's a bit more to it than that. We go with the circumstances. If that doesn't make us popular, well, I'm sorry.
