He guessed that Hilda was waiting for her two boys so he made his way to the kitchen where he poured himself a cup of coffee. After that first sip, he made his way to the table where Gretel was waiting. He wanted to greet her in her own language but couldn't. Instead, he took a seat next to her with "Good Morning, Gretel" as he sat with his arms before him, his hands handling the cup of coffee.
He took another sip and smiled at her, "Gretel, you look lovely this morning. I trust you slept well?"
Doc took another sip, waiting to see what was next. An answer from Gretel or the arrival of HIldagarten and her sons.

Gretel was sitting at the table eating some kind of sausage.
"M... M..." She tried to say something at Doc.
"M... M... Mo..." She stopped to take a bite to eat.
"Mo... Mo..." The look in her eyes was starting to liven up now.

Doc got up closer to Gretel, seeing if he could get a better response from her.
"Mo...." he said gently as he waved a hand to prompt her, "keep going, Pearl."
He took pauses to allow her to keep trying, "that's it. I'm here."
He normally didn't like singing in the morning as his voice was a bit phegmy but he managed a couple bars of the song he had sung before after which he sipped his coffee.
"Talk to me, Gretel. I'm here."

Gretel kept trying to speak.
"Mo... Mo..." She had the look of complete concentration.
"Mo... Mor..." After several minutes of Gretel trying to speak Hilda arrived.
"Morgen... Gretel..." She said to her daughter who stopped to look at her Mother.
"M... Mu... mut..." Gretel says.
"Mutt... Mutt..."

Doc sat with his coffee, watching Gretel communicate with her mother. She was trying and he didn't want to interfere. He felt it was needed and that progress was being made.
Doc then wore a look of confusion as he thought aloud, "Morgen?"
//sorry. I've been sick and working through that with theater work.

Gertel kept trying to speak to her Mother.
"Mutt... Mutt..." Every time she stutters the look in her eyes gets sadder and sadder.
"Mutt... Mutt..." She keeps repeating herself trying harder and hard to speak but cannot seem to.
"Mutt..." She stopped as Hilda spoke.
"Gretel... your Mutter is here..." Hilda looks at Doc as he thought out loud.
"Morgen is morning... in Rheinlandic..." She said as Gretel reaches up to her Mother.

Doc sipped his coffee and smiled at Gretel, reaching over and giving her cheek a stroke with his finger, "Morgen, Gretel." It was his best attempt at Rheinlandic.
Doc again began to sing softly.
"May the clouds of gray, come along. Nevermind if they, come along, Maybe they won't stay, very long. If you'll only say, you're mine alone.
I'd risk everything for this bliss, everything yes, I'd risk everything..." He reached over again and tickled her cheek as he finished, ".....everything for you."
He winked as he finished and sipped his coffee, getting up afterward for a re-fill.
"Care for a cup, Hildagart?" he asked her.

Hilda was busy holding Gretel's little hand.
"Ein moment Herr Doktor..." She said.
"Gretel..." She then said with a very loving tone.
"I know... you feel like there is nothing gut in die world but..." She moves closer to her daughter.
"Your Mutter wants... nien... needs you to smile..." Hilda is looking very lovingly at Gretel now.

For the moment, Doc just sat and watched, nursing his coffee while mother and daughter got comfortable. There was little else he could do besides sit and hope that Gretel would finally smile. Would she? Had the ice been broke? The next few minutes would tell a great deal.

Gretel kept looking at her mother but the look in her eyes has a hint of happyness if only the slightist amount.
She did try to curl her lips but after a few failed attempts she gave up and hugged Hildagart one of her ears to her mother's belly, she just looked out into space near Doc her eyes starting to fill with tears.
