I find the Turanic Raiders Freighter to be ideal for junker congress escorts. It has a cargo bay more then 4 times as big as VHF cargo bays, it is just agile enough for dogfights, and it has some serious shield and hull strength - with a good armor upgrade, it can take a torpedo hit with shields down and still have half of its hull, and the shields are more then twice as strong as fighter shields. I would use it against a Xeno-flown Eagle any day.
It looks awful, but junker ships were never meant to be pretty. Still, I hope it gets a re-texture in 4.85

Well, my favorite Gunboat is definitely the Rogue GB.
Taiidan Bomber is good as well, call me crazy, but I actually prefer it over the Rheinland Bomber.

Virage, Raven's Talon, Nomad/Wilde shipline. As for caps; the only caps I'm ok with are GBs, I'd say, and my favorites are the LH GB as well as the Scorpion. I have a Rheinland Pirate Cruiser, but it's going to be inactive now for a long time as it's story is pretty much finished now with it's Captain and First Officer...let's say, "leaving their former existence behind", and the remaining crew members departing with a small shuttle, leaving the ship hidden deep in a part of the Sirius Sector that isn't too welcoming to humans.
As soon as 4.85 will be released, it is very likely though that a new ship is going to replace the RT:).
