Yes, he indeed was a vassal of the King of Hungary. Erdély, or Transylvania in Hungarian, made up about half of Hungarian territory, and it was a very important land. János Hunyadi, who led the Varna Crusade of 1444, was the Duke of Erdély and Vlad's predecessor, albeit they were contemporaries.

A recent discovery of the other half of Drakula's painting seems to support your claims, it has been found that the Count is in fact looking at some particularly Hungarian things.
